I give you the salmon cannon. I kid you not, this is a serious project in the Pacific NW. I recently read about it in Popular Mechanics, and had to look for a video.

We haven't sent men back to the moon in 40 years but have salmon transportation that is second to none!

 More than just fish, this looks like an environmentally friendly and cheap solution to high speed ground transportation! Like a system of vacuum tubes, as were once used in office buildings, to zip people from place to place! I can, however, see potential problems with football tackle-like pile ups at destination points. Big luggage might jam things up. Personal hygiene could  be an issue. OK, better just do fish!
