The story says the museum wants to repaint it. I think that would be a terrible mistake. To have survived in that condition for all of these years and now hide that history is the wrong thing to do. So far as I know there is not a single example of a billboard car that still is in its original paint. Historic artifacts can only be original once.
I think job number one at any museum should be "preservation" with restoration reserved for those pieces that are too far gone for preservation.

There is quite a discussion going on over on the RyPN discussion board (www.rypn.org) concerning how to preserve this great find. Some favor preservation in situ with the original surviving patina, while others think it should be thoroughly documented before restoration with new paint.
