We have lost much of our snow cover but it seems to be due to evaporation as much as melting!  Just hasn't been warm enough long enough.

Another unusual "Vortex" thing this year, been so cold that sap is not running.  A news report yesterday noted that tap buckets have gotten much less than previous years due to temps not getting above freezing.  Two fellows were interviewed that stated that when it doesn't get above freezing until mid day, the sap doesn't have time to run much before sunset and freezing temps return. The report added that Maple Syrup Sunday is the 4th Sunday of March but there won't be as much yield this year.  The harvest will have to extend well into April which delays production.  The larger sugar houses produce 150-200 gallons of pure maple syrup by this time but most New England producers have been affected by the low temperatures.

Dale,

There are some sugar maples along the railroad but not enough on rr property to tap. Plus we'd need a sugar shack or someone to biol it down in their kitchen.

BTW - Just heard this Vortex story today:

Father to son -  About our tap buckets ... there's good news and bad news.

Son - What's the good news?

Father - The sap is starting to run.

Son - What's the bad news?

Father - It's July.

Looks like 2-4 inches may arrive here in Pennsylvania tomorrow, and if the forecast is correct, you guys up there may get a bigger dump on Wednesday. Will we be shoveling snow off the ROW in a month?

Forecast is not correct. Hoping for 2 inches or less. Currently the snow level at Sheepscot is a foot or less in most places, slightly higher in the protected areas. Rails showing on parts of Davis Grade.

March comes in like a lion and goes out like a ... tiger.  Half inch of sleet and 35 mph wind gusts.  Really?  Ok Vortex, you win.
