October 2013 Work Planning
« on: October 02, 2013, 06:11:20 AM »
Unlike the Federal Government right now, the WW&F will be open this coming weekend!  Anticipated work:

* #9
* Prep for work weekend, which is the following weekend

Between work weekend coming up and the SR&RL annual meeting we may be low on volunteers - so please come!

Saturday evening there's also a ham & bean supper at the Alna Fire House.

The Western Virginia Contingent plans on being there for the long weekend.  Having just ridden the SNCF TGV I have a new appreciation for surfacing and aligning track.  The Fire House Ham and Bean supper may provide additional fuel for Sunday workers. ;)

Due to next weekend being work weekend, this weekend will include prep work to Big Joe. I have been busy with the trailer and have not had time to look at it this summer so Saturday is the day.

Um... My previous post about being there all day Saturday was referring to October 12th.
Must remember to think before typing.

Work done on Saturday Oct 5:

* Garage: Crews put up the south wall (the wall with all the doors).  We also had materials delivered today and earlier in the week, more materials are coming later this week.
* Clean up: Jason organized a clean up of the metal corner, in the northeast corner of Bay 2, in preparation for doing something with one of the tools Brendan delivered.
* Big Joe: Mike fiddled with Big Joe and got the up/down working properly.
* Track: We had delivered some large timbers for switches in the north yard.  They are currently sitting at the north end of the north yard.  Also Steve will be ordering material for the Alna Center crossing replacements.

Also....

Big Joe was run in the yard, tamping a half dozen ties, ensuring its readiness for next weekend.

Kubota received a new air cleaner, replacing what I think was the original one from when the machine was new, or at least still in Japan.

More rails were fabricated for the trailer.

Anticipated work weekend of October 12, 2013: Fall Work Weekend!

* Thursday - a diesel charter
* Friday - there's a steam and railcar charter in the morning.
* Saturday - steam train, regular schedule
* Sunday - steam train, regular schedule
* Monday - no scheduled or chartered trains

Partial list of likely work:
* Garage construction
* Track work - maintenance on the mainline, and probably a small crew looking at the north yard layout
* #9 - no Jason, but I think somebody who knows whats going on will be around for it
* Food - no Longos, Linda's in charge
* Basement
* Crossing plank replacement
* Weed whacking
* Trailer
* Alna Center ramp?

There's probably more projects to do, I just can't think of them.

Weather is forecasted to be pretty decent.

I think Rick Sisson and Brendan will be around this weekend.  Jason called me the other week to discuss several activities for No. 9:

1.  Install the brake beams, hangers, connecting levers, etc. for the rear truck.  That's assuming Jason made new attachment brackets for the frame.
2.  If there is time, attach the chain to the brake wheel so the rear truck can actually apply braking force as th elocomotive is moved around...
3.  As Brendan has shown in his photos and progress, attach the front bunter beam.
4.  Drill the smokebox for items such as the marker bracket and cinder pocket.
5.  If the rear brakes are complete, begin installing decking.
6.  The iron sheet is on hand, I believe, for the boiler jacket.  The old jacket sheets need to be compared to the locations of the standoff banding installed by Leon Weeks (very nice work!) and then measure, mark, and cut the new sheets so they can be sent off to have the Russia Iron finish created.

If there are people interested in the North Yard, we could probably (hopefully?) install the two 60-pound switches and possibly progress the roundhouse/coaling pocket track somewhat.

Jason and/or Dana can jump in and correct or change what I've written.

James,
Is the regular timetable for summer (12 trains) or fall (6 trains)?  I have friends coming up from Boston to ride and I didn't want to misinform.
Dave,
I believe that the smokebox has already been drilled for marker light brackets but not the cinder pocket.  I did drill for the cinder cleaning hole though.

This weekend is the last weekend of the summer train schedule: 6 daily roundtrips from Sheepscot - more round trips than the Downeaster does!

Thanks, Steve.  See you this weekend.  I believe Jason has the cinder pocket available for us to mark and locate.
