Reddington
« on: September 13, 2013, 07:28:02 AM »
I was just reading todays Portland Press Herald, and there is an article in there about building a missle defense site in Reddington. I am on my mobile device so can not provide a link at this time. I will later tonight when I get home, unless someone beats me to it.

Strange that they would look at that area when there was one at Bangor (old Dow AFB), along with several other decommissioned sites in the state where there is already a reserve/nat'l guard group already there.

There's the area in question.

When I was visiting home, my parents and I drove by this area in our search for any remnants of the Eustis RR/SRRL. I was quite surprised to learn later about the Navy facility.

Reddington is one of the few parts of the SR&RL system we've never explored, due to the Navy base there. We used to hear all kinds of stories about armed patrols who would use "deadly force" on trespassers, sort of like Area 51.  We suspect that was an exaggeration, but who knows?

We have hiked the R.O.W. on both ends to pretty near the boundary of the base.  People have said that there's nothing to see there anyway, but it's just that you can't get in there that makes it so attractive.

Does anyone know what ACTUALLY is left of the railroad in there, if anything?

Richard

I recall an article in an SR&RL Museum newsletter about an expedition into Reddington a number of years ago.  They received permission to do so, of course.  It was pretty interesting, as I recall, but I can't remember too much else about it.

For some reason, I think Gary Kohler wrote an article, with photos, about walking some of the SR&RL right of way when they were stopped by Navy guards; seems they were either in an artillery range or in the survival training facility.  I can't find reference to it in the tables of contents of his Maine 2 Foot Quarterly magazine.

When I was driving charters out of Portland, I took a busload  of reservists from Brunswick NAS to the Reddington facility. I was escorted in several miles to an unloading spot. I tried hard to see any traces of the SR&RL but saw nothing.
Then somone mentioned he thought the R.O.W. was the road I had just traveled.
I do not know and it is a mystery for me.

Now that you mention it I think the road is built on the old roadbed.

I suppose if you took a metal detector on the ROW, you could find plenty of remains.

For your education, here's what real missile defense looks like. If ever they install it, it'll be a stupid waste of taxpayer $$$.

I have hiked up to the lake a number of times.  The south stone bridge abutment for the Oberton Stream is intact and in good shape, it even has the wooden sill (two years ago).  We never crossed the dam to get over to the town site because of the signs.  We could see where lots of people fish along the lake.  Hiking up sluce hill was interesting and I was surprised that there is a bit of down grade just before the line crosses Oberton Stream.  I have a couple of spikes and one tie plate from the hikes.
