Was Bridgton Jct. a scheduled stop for Maine Central passenger trains? If so, there would be no need for a signal to flag a train. The signal on the station roof was most likely a train order signal, which the station agent would set to indicate to approaching trains that he had order for them. Depending on the type of order, the train would have picked up orders "on the fly," or they may have been required to stop to sign for the orders. The signal would have indicated to the train what action was necessary. I think I agree with James, that the object in question was probably a light, or it may have been a light on a mail crane to enable the RPO clerk to see the mail bag awaiting pick-up. Or maybe it really was Thomas' face......
