There once was a train nut named Ira,
who thought the discussion was tired.
With wit (I suppose)
he attempted some prose.
But his poetry failed to inspire.

There was a conductor named Jake,
who from Albion, the trains he did make,
He smoked a cigar,
the ash, it went too far,
and set afire the rake.

(Rake= a British train consist)

There once was a brakeman named Hans,
when at Turner Centre he stacked all the cans,
With milk and cream,
he appeared to seem,
to put butter in all the pans.

There once was a trackman named Ike,
Starting from Alna, he did spike.
with a pick and a maul,
he hammered them all,
and at Trout Brook he then nailed a Pike.

If you put these together, you should have most of the WW&F in verse from Wiscasset to Albion...........

There was a fireman who was noted
his boiler's pop valve he overloaded.
One day his gun wouldn't fire,
the water didn't get higher
and then his boiler exploded.

(gun = another name for an injector.)

Maybe with all this verse we can make a sonnet.

Well Dave,  Cindy and I recently watched "The Sound of Music".  I had some of the tunes in my head and just changed a few words to fit the railroad ... that's what happens when the truck radio quits on a long drive.  I'm gonna have to fix that radio!

How do you solve the problem of a tamper.
How do you build and make it fit the track.
How do you solve a problem like the tamper ...
you gotta have faith that someone has the knack.

Many a times we've had to lift low track joints,
and we always do the work by hand.
Many a times we have to fix the frost heaves ...
a new tamper would be grand!

I liked standard gauge now I like two foot, narrowed in every way
People I meet they tell me it's neat that I like boxcars that sway.

I like narrow gauge better than standard gauge I guess you can say it's true
I go to Sheepscot to work on the railroad, wind up on Dana's crew.

Totally unprepared was I to know the ways of Maine
Harry was there to show the ropes, he made it all so plain.

WW&F Favorite Things -  version 2.4.4

Rain drops on switch points and whiskers on Longo
Bright copper sand pipes and Fred sings a song-o
A stack of new two-foot books tied up with string,
These are a few of my favorite things.

Dana's in denim, there's grease on the steam crew
The brakemen are thirsty and wanting a cold brew
White plastic buckets all filled up with coal
These are a few of the things that are goals.

10's getting fired and Vern's got the steam up
Coffee is brewing and Zack wants a big cup
Gordon is oiling the side rods with care
They will go out with just minutes to spare ...

When the flies bite, when the bee stings, when I'm getting mired
I simply remember my narrow-gauge friends and then I don't feel so tired.

Stewart,
Just beautiful! And appropriate for the season.  Methinks you missed your calling.

But I can...

There once was a train on Nantucket
With tracks three-feet wide; who'd of thunk it!
But a hurricane came,
and blew off the train.
So now to move freight, they must truck it!
