I know this has been mentioned before, but what about prisoners?  They use them around here all the time on the highways picking up trash, etc.  They come from the County Jail in Middleton and most are waiting trial, etc. Not violent criminals or anything like that.

RICHARD: We've been advised against having prisoners work on the right of way.  We have things people might want to steal.

FRED: Jason and Mike are working up a plan.

Hiring might be the way to go. Unless we want to buy (or rent) a machine...

That is exactly what we have been talking about back channel. For about 50g, we could have that set up too.

Last night, I saw a used CAT 302.5 mini-excavatoron eBay for under $10K. And a brand new 30-inch flail mower would run about $5,000. I think a small, heavy-duty purpose-made flat car would be better than hy-rail gear.  Actually, with rubber treads, running a mini-excavator on the ties is not going to do any appreciable damage to the track. The whole rig weighs less than six tons and would spread out over four or five ties. Why complicate the issue?

Or, for quite a bit of the right-of-way, drive it on the sides instead of the track itself.

I know of 2 flail mowers in my immediate area that are owned by contractors. One is a neighbor. Neither of them have ever set them up and used them. I was looking for someone to do some clearing for me. They both claim that unless you have a dedicated machine they are too much work to set up. Our town has one that they use on the roadsides to keep things trimmed. I did see a real narrow one in use a month or so ago. I am sure you guys know a lot more about them than I do.

In my talks with Wayne, I have thought and thought about hi-rail gear. Best option is for operation to be with the rubber tracks on the ties, with the flanged wheels being used to guide the machine along.

All this is still in the dreaming stage. I have been in touch with my local Caterpillar dealer to make sure the machine Wayne mentioned would do what we want. As long as we don't mount a bush hog on the machine, it will have plenty of power.

Ed;
Wayne is way ahead of you. He sent that to Mike a couple of days ago. He figures the budget for that will be a bit over our annual budget. The tunnel cleaner was a popular item for discussion. Me, I liked the branch trimmer.

I'll have to go back and watch it again. I was so transfixed by the implements that I never even looked in the cab!
