#4'S ALIVE!!!!!
« on: July 01, 2012, 09:29:30 AM »
After an awfully hot day at WW&F, I headed down to MNG to witness #4's test runs.

Looks great guys!  Congratulations all around.  I note my good friends and fellow live steam members, Joe and Jay Monty, were running.  I'm sure after all the work they put into the project, that they must have been elated, along with everyone else who took part.

Onward and upward!

Today I chased #4 via bike! (Faster than car and more spots than car!)

Very nice videos.

A couple of observations:

In Pt. 1, a dad and two young kids cross in front of the train without even stopping to look, though the train is moving toward them several yards away. Obviously no danger of being run over, but still, a teachable moment. The dad should have stopped and explained to the kids that you must look both ways at a crossing, and stay where you are if a train is seen approaching.  Just dragging them across the track is a poor lesson for them.

It seems as if there weren't many passengers, considering it is a big holiday.

Finally, I'm surprised the local anti-noise activists aren't all over the MNG about the extensive whistling close to downtown.  Your average Yuppie doesn't enjoy locomotive whistles the way we do.

Nice to see #4 back in service.

Richard,
They're allowed to blow for Backlot and Ocean Gateway. Steam guys like to blow for Trails East. However, they're not allowed to blow for PYS East.

I forgot to mention PYS West. You're not SUPPOSED to blow it, but the steam crew likes to blow for it.. It all pretty much depends who the engineer is!

What, for the uninitiated, is PYS East and West?

Like WW&F, MNG has a name for every spot on the line. There are two crossings on both sides of PORT Co. (PYS= Portland Yacht Services), East & West

Fantastic Job by the MNG restoration crew. So happy to see steam in Portland again. The YouTube videos are great. Thanks Dylan for posting the links.

Any chance you can push your return date back to Sept 1st? #4 will be running on the 1st and 2nd of September (Sat/Sun of Labor Day weekend).

I'll definitely try try. I've been to the MNGRR 3 or 4 times and have yet to see 4 running. I always come up at the wrong time ::). Hopefully this can be the first time.
