The other side of the road is south.

Well we also have to cut down trees if we move south because the roadbed on the other side of the road behind the station is covered with trees! :)

So when are you coming out with a saw? The RR is good about providing work gloves.  ;)

I tried to bring up the idea of laying track south of Cross Rd briefly 1 year ago in the old forum, with the replies mainly about how it would get in the way of pickup truck parking!

But I second Stewart's proposal of using lightweight rail. If we were to do that with "gravel" ballast as was in place in the original railroad, we could give visitors a view of how the original railroad looked in addition to giving the handcars a place to roam. It would definitely add to the big picture of the museum experience now, and some year if we cross Cross Rd it could always be upgraded as needed.

And a little seasonal flooding only adds to the authenticity!

If the Board does approve this plan we could lay the track in a day if we have all the material.

The WW&F Telephone Department will not be providing magneto telephone service for that location at this time. ;)

Right,... umm... no phones.
Well,... we could always wear STAR TRECK style tunics under our period-style shirts and use cell phones. (I think they'll pass for "Comunicators. ;) )

Finally, we can get to one location the phone company can't

Any changes to the grade (at least changes involving earthmoving) would probably require DEP (Dept. of Environmental Protection) involvement.  No point in doing that until we are serious in our intent to extend south.
Just curious, how much "ballast" could you add each year without getting a DEP permit? A few inches every year could really add up over time, and with panel track and  steel ties , than a heavier soil could be used.
By the way there was some panel track owned by a private party in Massachusetts. available a couple of years ago . If anyone is interested PM me for info.

Ahh, but, there were Wireless systems in use in the early 20th century. I'm sure we could rig up some spark gap transmitters in the freight shed to communicate with the 'south section'. That would make our visitors jump, I'm sure!!

Before we get too carried away on this subject, let's all pause and give thanks for the track we have and those who struggle to maintain it. And remember that it's still 5,000 feet or more to Route 218. And after that, we have lots to build in the Sheepscot terminal area. ;)
