Kinda,  what I mean by a reverse stamping, instead of striking the letter into the metal strip, this would be bringing the strip onto a letter "positive" where you end up with a raised letter coming out from the surface of the strip.

These used to be a simple arm press with a platen where the letter/number dies would be inserted, then a tinplate strip would be placed over the die index and crimp.  The imprinted strip would be then attached to the body of a metal object via open tip soldering.  If I can find a picture, I'll add it.

I have such a machine with two spools of the soft tinplate strips.  I use it occasionally to make labels.  It came out of an electrical shop in a steel mill.  They would label outlets with it as to what voltage they were.

Rick,
Please PM me, too, as I would like to replace the toggle switch labels on the light control panel on #52.
Thanks!
John M

That project on 52 has my support.  The panel itself could probably stand to be replaced and I would do it if I could get to Maine.

I would like to redesign the panel to include a fused cigarette lighter outlet - not for a cigarette lighter, but rather for the numerous automotive goodies that are designed to plug into a cigarette lighter outlet.

Perhaps we could put (loosely mounted and removable) a small solar panel on top of the cab so crew can keep their technology charged.  Remember, we cannot use our technology while operating railroad equipment.

Nope. Many of the locomotives now used by the sugar railways are real monsters, weighing 40 tons or more, and a lot of them have been regauged from 42-inch gauge to 24-inch. I have no idea why they don't topple over! They are much wider than our clearance diagram, anywhere from 7'6" to over 8 feet. I think I've done my duty in getting Wilmar as a donation. If somebody else wants an Australian sugar loco, talk to the Board and go for it with their blessing.
