2ft Tampers [was Australian Two Foot]
« on: November 13, 2008, 08:57:49 AM »
Most impressed by 2-foot gauge tamper (and regulator).  I guess our way of laying track is still the "best" way.  But, a tamper and regulator shared amongst Maine's active museums might be nice.

Let's start saving now for a tamper-regulator! How much are they?

James took a picture of one while on his trip. Looked like it could fit into his overnight bag. Matter of fact, here is a repost of his picture from the old forum.

Wow...
that thing looks COMPACT!
If one WAS acquired for the museums to share it not olnly wouldn't take up much space in any one museum's trackage/shops, but it'd be plenty eas to cart around.  ;)

About 10,000 Fosters.
We want...A SHRUBBERY!  One that looks nice, and not too expensive.

If we got a two-foot gauge tamper, how would you guys maintain your manly physiques? The jitterbugs are better than a gym! We'd have to cut back on the Vitamin Y, you know....and no more kielbasa for you, Dave.

I thought on the old forum, a board member stated it wasn't done that way on the original WW&F and we won't be doing the new way any time soon on the revived WW&F or something like that or maybe not. ::)

I think the tamping machine I took a picture of was a home-built job, built at the Talyllyn Railway.  They are 2' 3", but the machine can be regauged to 2 foot and was used at least once on the WHR(P).  I don't know any details beyond that.

Tom,  I'm not speaking for any officers or Board members but I know the museum's approach to track construction has changed.  When I started in 1997 everything was done by hand including tamping.  As the mainline grew we realized that air tampers were a good idea.  They allow more work from the available crew.   Now that we have well over 2 miles of main and even more yard trackage to maintain, a hydraulic tamper would be a good purchase.  It would save the crew for replacing ties, etc and more people could do tamping, even members that can't physically do it the old way.  I'll note that if we have an event like the picnic or 1910 Days where visitors are watching a track crew demonstration everything should be done as it was 100 years ago.

Completely agree with the previous comments.  I would suggest contacting the "Brits" for plans or a quote for building one.  Of course it should be with the stipulation that the museum has coordinated with all of our 2 ft bretherern to share the cost, maintenance, and use of the machine.

It would also be nice if we could adapt the basic design to also line & level.  But if not, I'm sure we have the talent to adapt a camera system from a used source.

I completely agree with Stewart's observations.  Based on what I've seen and read in other parts of the forum over the years, track expansion seems to attract many more volunteers than does maintaining existing trackage.  The "home guard" of existing trackage maintainers would benefit the most.
And for those who like the old fashioned way, the 1910 Days would help to bring that system back as an educational experience.  Maybe a siding with lighter rail, untreated ties, and just gravel - no crushed rock - ballast could be part of this presentation.

While semi-automatic track-laying devices would certainly be nice, don't forget that adequate parking and real restrooms were the most desired improvements when the membership was surveyed a few years ago. Laying track is what keeps the volunteers interested, and accommodations are what keeps the customers coming. The Board of Directors, with the assistance of the Long Range Plan, has a delicate balancing act to perform in allocating the available funds in these two directions.

John;
Of course we're aware of bathrooms and parking. Unfortunately they're not the stuff of day dreaming (at least to me). Christmas is coming and we were all dreaming whilst looking at the Sears Christmas catalog (remember those?). Don't be such a wet blanket! We boys like our toys!

Plasser Australia built the 2 foot tamper model GWS 75.

Here their URL  http://www.plasser.com.au/en/start/index.htm

Plasser America is at http://www.plasseramerican.com/

Dave,
How big is the museum's chimney?  Do you think one of those baby tampers would fit down it if Santa brought one? No harm in dreaming.
