Next challenge for the shop gang

Here's the next thing the shop crew needs to get cracking on. Jason, Mike, Leon, Ed -- have at it!

Shouldn't we mount the mowers on a swing arm so the edges beyond the row can be mowed also?

I was thinking that myself.  There's not much grass between the rails or ties.

Simply get a cow or two to graze the ROW.
This way you will have a "Lawn Mooer"

With all the grass left to cut, maybe we should get a baa, baa.

For those of you who don't know Fred, you'll have to imagine his Maine accent to really get his joke.

I'd like to have the drive unit from that contraption. Looks like a one-lunger with a belt drive. Very nice.

Well the WW&F did have a track car with a flat belt drive from a flywheel hit-and-miss engine.  It was used in the 1920s.

We can do it. Here's one of the EBT's original Fairmont motor cars.

I was thinking that myself.  There's not much grass between the rails or ties.

I think, based on a close look at the picture, that the contraption with the reel mowers is designed to mow between the rails. (??)
My experience with reel mowers is that they will not mow any grass or weeds that are more than a few inches tall. The blades of grass get pushed away from the bedknife by the reel if they are too long.
So this thing must have been for someplace where they wanted a nice lawn around the rails?
Does that make any sense?

On a serious note, I think trimming the ROW has become too big of a job for 4-5 personal sized string trimmers, especially with the heat we've had this summer. It's tough work to go at it all day.
A solution may be some sort of clever mechanical device, kind of like Joe Lindsay.

If you replace the mower reels with brooms....you have a dandy ballast regulator.
