Sadly, you are correct on lack of responsibility/punishment, Mike. A couple years ago a young adult burned the 1916 Westminster SC Southern depot. He was convicted, but back on the street in a few days, no consequences that i know of. Grants and donations are rebuilding the depot, not the perpetrator. Dale Reynolds, Pendleton SC

Thanks Keith for bringing this article to our attention. Near the end of the article is this sentence about the materials for the rivets:

"The rivets have to be custom made with just the right mix of materials to have just the right tinsel properties."

The reporter is not writing about Christmas tree decorations here. In the summer of 1948 I worked in the C&O main shops in Huntington, West Virginia, and from that experience I can vouch for the fact that West Virginians do indeed say "tinsel" when they mean "tensile."  A couple of others I recall are "arn" for "iron," "MEE-ilk" for "milk," and "He DEE-id?" for "He did?"

hey steve, as a frequent visitor to the great nrhs chapter in huntington, i agree with their murdering the pronunciations, but at least every other adjective isn't 'wicked'.... dale

Just got off the phone with Newcastle Sq. Realty about our cottage in Aug. They said cottage rental business is vary slow, but that the restaurant business are all doing well. Last year at this time, when gas prices were hi but the stock market hadnt cratered yet, they reported cottage rentals pretty good, but that restaurants were going out of business like crazy. Go figure..... dale

The current R&R has an article on the Laona and Northern which says they are going to replace the 60# rail with 90# rail, 2 miles worth. They have a grant for it, but no timing was stated. If anyone is in northeastern Wisconsin this season, it would be cool to check this out. For reference, 56# and 60# rail is between 3 7/8 and 4 1/8 inches high. Dale Reynolds, Pendleton SC

happy new year!!! as some of you know, my wife is president of the largest all-volunteer historical society in the state outside of charleston, many millions in assets and a 6 figure annual budget. she has no interest in the wwandf as she was not fortunate enuf to grow up in maine as i did. but she has been there many times, most recently last august when tha extension foundation was just formed. i showed her the last shot of the extension and all she could say was 'i sure wish we could get those guys down here to do our stuff, i can get tons of grant money but not craftsmanship like that!!!' ..... 'nuff said.... dale reynolds, pendleton sc
