Museum Discussion / Re: U.S. Census reports

Looks like William A Maloy may have gone on to Portland and hired on with the MEC as an engineer in the 1930 and 1940 census?  Probably came down from St. John, or St. Stephens NB where there were some other Maloys.  Possibly named Augustine William Maloy?

Edit:  Found his son William E Maloy's birth record in Portland.  It says his father (William A Maloy) was from Spring Hill, NS.
After working as an engineer of the WW&F or possibly the MCRR?? he went to Brunswick and then on to Portland.  he was still working for the MCRR in 1940 census.  He appears to have had two brothers in the Wiscasset/ Alna area.  A John and a Richard.  Richard married a Lydia Rhines....

We cleared all the blown down and small trees on the top of the former Kelly ROW and if we have the energy, we will mow the top of the ROW there sunday.  Then you will be able to go from end of track to head tide again.  (on foot)  It is quite passable now but you have to walk around the washout areas, which is no big deal.  Nice hike when the Trout brook water is low like it is now and you won't get too wet.  Rubber boots are a drier solution to that problem.

I was able to weed whack all of the top of Judy Fossel’s ROW section.  I had to drive in using her road and first weed whack my way from where the cars park all the way down to the ROW as the brush had grown up there.  Now it is clear but is was a big distraction that took most of my time for the day.  I also did a little bit going north from the washout where the road meets the ROW on up into the former Kelly property but not that much.  There is only a very short section between where Mike is grading and where I stopped because I ran out of gas for the weed whacker.

I may be able to take some pictures if I can get up there this weekend.  I just don't want to bring my camera in there unless I have a light load of other work equipment with me.  We'll see.

Well it was hot and humid today but I spent about 2-1/2 hours mowing from trout brook, south to the 2100ft marker that Fred put up.  So that is probably about 2/3 of the way up the mountain.  Of course I don't recall were the 2100 feet was measured from but its coming from the other direction than I was working from.  So basically, from 218 south to the north end land purchased from the Kellys is mowed roughly the width of the top of the ROW.  There are several washouts and small treeish obstacles that still need a quick chainsaw attack.  I stopped where there were more substantial fallen trees and I could not get the mower through that area without cutting them up first.  More of a job for the weed whacker crews from this point on.  Sorry, no pictures because I have to lug everything in there by myself (mower, gas can, .45, water, manual branch cutters, ect.) and don’t have a cell phone that takes pictures.

I re-mowed from 218 south to trout brook and then lugged the mower over the brook and mowed up towards the mountian.  I got up into the first s-curve.  Left the mower up there so maybe I'll get back Sunday for a little more.

Well Boothbay must have their spray booth in the coverred bridge, requiring them to run the train around the loop for a few days in order to get a good coat of paint.   ;D

The Original W&Q and WW&F: 1894-1933 / Re: Ships and boats at Wiscasset

What scale?  There are a series of local history picture books by Arcadia publishing.  (They include a book on the Portland Company.)  Perhaps look at some of those for various coastal towns like Boothbay Harbor, Bath, ect.  There are many different books and there should be lots of pictures of ships and boats.  There were some of the steamboats out of Boothbay in one of the Boothbay editions.  One of those ran a regular route to Wiscasset and had it's own pier and "station" next to the WW&F.  If you have Narrow Gauge in the Sheepscot Valley vol. one, there are pictures of the station/ warf.  Lobster boats at the time were often sailboats, particularly a design called a Friendship Sloop.  Someone mad an HO scale model of those a while back but I don't know if it is still in production.  Various small one gas engines were also used on smaller vessels.    Some of those would be fun to make.

We also got a nice mention under the topic of "favorite Maine holiday traditions"  in Down East magazine on pg. 16 of the December issue.
