General Discussion / Re: WW&F in Eisenbahn Romantik
« on: September 28, 2017, 06:00:40 PM »
Hi James,

WOW!  That's pretty cool!  Eisenbahn Romantik!  That's pretty impressive.  A lot of very knowledgeable and well-regarded railroad preservationists speak German, travel extensively, and happen to contribute to this very web group from time-to-time.  I wonder who will be the next to get the word out.

Best Regards,
Glenn

Thanks Bill!!!

Your review of the current condition of the mainline grade has really given this fellow from "away" a better appreciation for what you guys are accomplishing and the work to come!

Do you think the number of washouts is indicative of any specific condition of the soil in the area or is it just the natural consequence of the many years with no maintenance?

Glenn

Work and Events / Re: Trout Brook Bridge - Official Work Thread
« on: September 09, 2017, 04:54:35 AM »
Hi Guys,

You may want to widen the bridge to about 12'.  A 2' gauge wooden wedge plow is about 9' wide and it may be good to allow an extra foot or two on each side for safety's sake.

You don't want a repeat of the Fred H. Allen incident.  (passenger killed)

Glenn

Museum Discussion / Re: Finding the WW&F on Facebook
« on: August 14, 2017, 10:47:40 PM »
Hi Guys,

I have read a number of articles this past year that WWI seems to have become a largely "forgotten conflict."

It would seem then, that cooperative events like this most recent encampment are important for that reason alone - not to mention other equally valid ones - like interpreting the railroads being operated by the Government for the duration of the WWI.

Are there state-wide or region-wide organizations that would interested in making something like this an annual event?  Would they have vehicles like trucks or ... tanks?

I would be willing to assist with the planning and coordination.

Glenn

Two Footers outside of the US / Re: Trip to Poland
« on: July 28, 2017, 03:09:50 PM »
Hi Dave,

I haven't done a lot of research on narrow gauge lines in either Eastern Europe in general or Poland in particular.  But what I have found tells me the loss is mine because from what I can tell, there was/is a WHOLE LOT of narrow gauge in the region.

The only completely Polish reference I have is: "Nasze Koleje" by Bogdan Pokropinroh.  I think this line ran/runs between Warsaw and Radzymin, a distance of 19 km, and was/is 800mm gauge.  The only other thing I feel very sure of is the word "obrotnica" means "turntable".  The book was published in Warsaw by WKL.

I've had this book for decades and can't read it.  (It was free and needed a home.)  I'd be happy to talk with Dave, Ira, anyone else - if they can help unlock this multi-decade mystery.

Please send me email.

Best Regards,
Glenn

A fairly recent video (2013) taken during a steam tour of Central Gregorio Arlee Manalich. The narration is in German, but somehow I don't think you'll mind

Hi Guys,

Here's a nice video covering Cuban 30" gauge steam in 2004.

A fair number of these locos have been saved by the Cuban government for static display.

Glenn
