Museum Discussion / Specifications needed
« on: January 25, 2017, 01:51:22 PM »
Hey all,
I need some measurements from some of the equipment in the museum. I'm asking here since I don't know anyone personally at the museum to email. Here is what I need:

Median coupler height off the rail
Maximum axle loading for the entire line (for locomotives)
Maximum width of equipment (locomotive)
3/4 scale coupler dimensions for mounting in a locomotive frame
Minimum clearance for under-chassis

Also, would propane/gasoline fuel (dual fuel) be acceptable for fuel for a locomotive to be used on the line?

Work and Events / What If? Design Project: 1925-1940 2ft Diesel
« on: January 06, 2017, 10:00:44 AM »
I thought that I could set a few personal goals that involves the museum this year and one is simple; become a lifetime member. The other is much more complex but I have been doing research for the last year as to what/how to accomplish this goal. I will try to start the drawings for W.W.&F. #s 54 & 55. I have been looking at the 1925-1940 era industrial switcher designs and trying to hypothesis what the RR would have done to have built or home-built for a possible transition/mixed use of non-steam locomotives if the RR lasted past 1933. Granted, the use of very common current day engines/drive train would be used to keep running costs down, but the sheet metal body would reflect the era's styling cues and operating routines. I know many might be reluctant to have such locomotives at all, but I see it as an opportunity to do something for the long term life of the RR/museum and keep it inline with a "what if" timeline, as well as providing a locomotive the is as heavy as the steam locomotives to serve as back-up power and use for work trains to save wear and tear on the more valuable locomotives in the collection. Please feel free to ask me anything, I am still drawing up the basics of the specifications. Also, I don't want to step on any toes by posting this, so if it is a bad idea or not welcome please let me know.

I had this happen to me a few years ago in an email attachment and Hotmail ended up locking my account for two weeks because they saw that my account was sending out spam. It was a PITA to make a new account and try to migrate everything over. So even though it might be just a replicating email, the companies that you have your email with might lock not only your account but others that your account emailed, so buyer beware.  8)

It should be noted that for the last 24+ hours there has been an ongoing email spoofing attack worldwide (fortinet.com show this). Just please be careful in what attachments/emails you open, and scan them with free antivirus programs (avast ect).  ;)

Museum Discussion / Losing Our Direction
« on: October 22, 2016, 07:24:40 AM »
The main purpose of the"F" on the side of the diesel is, I believe, so that hostlers can set up several units, each facing in a different direction, at the head end of a train, to move in the same direction rather than pulling in opposite directions. I am pretty sure that all an MU cable will tell the engine is "go forward" or "go in reverse", it can't tell a trailing unit what direction is forward and which reverse, so there is a switch in the cab that is moved depending on which direction is the front of the train and which direction the engine is facing. Certain railroads ran long hood forward (Norfolk and Western among them) and so the F accounts for these differences.

I wonder if any 2-ft gauge railroad, anywhere, ever had MU capable diesels?

GE U8 diesels for South African rail were MU capable I think (24").

Well, then it should be settled. If you are going to goto the Museum for a "day" trip, pack a cooler for a picnic. Do people still do that anymore?
I take a lunch every time I head to the WW&F. And my wife and I always take along a picnic basket and lunch when we take day trips.

If I am taking a trip to a place that does not have food, I support myself. As far as going on a picnic, I have not done that in the states in a long time, but when I visit Japan I have done it a few times.
