But I can...

There once was a train on Nantucket
With tracks three-feet wide; who'd of thunk it!
But a hurricane came,
and blew off the train.
So now to move freight, they must truck it!

Duncan Mackiewicz sent me a set of 7 pictures to share with everyone. I have linked them here (rather than post them) since some of our forum participants still use dial-up connections.

From North (Sheepscot Station) to South (just before the beaver pond)

Thanks for investigating. I hope Courtney had her Nintendo DS well-charged.

Earlier in the thread, there was a report of rail off of "Roque Bluffs Road". Did you check there, too?

Actually, it is my understanding that the RR owns one very small piece of land in Wiscasset.

It would be a great advantage to build south (in the future), for the following reasons:
1. Connect with the Rt. 1 summer traffic.
2. Connect with the Maine Eastern RR
3. Local connection with Wiscasset (historical).
All true. However, the ridership/revenue increase would never even come close to covering the cost of construction.

I do like the idea of going "just far enough" south of Sheepscot/Cross Rd. to give a NB train a place to come from
I think that is something that would be reasonable to do, but after we cross 218 to the north and start dealing with the FRA, etc.

a. Yes.
b. No.
The beaver pond is much further south, and the ROW there is flooded all the time. There is road that crosses the ROW right in front of the flooded area. This road is a good 4 feet higher than the ROW. Unless the road is cut down, we'll have to build up to meet it. Then, we *could* potentially fill across the pond, provided:
1. The EPA (and other government agencies) let us.
2. The land owner, who has a cabin on the edge of the ROW, agrees to let us through.

Honestly, I think it is much more likely that we would cross 218 towards Head Tide before we would try to build south of Sheepscot. The ROW north of 218 is quite scenic along the Sheepscot River, the ROW south is just woods.

I found some on NERail: http://photos.nerail.org

A great aerial shot:

This is the result of the beaver dam. The cameraman is standing on the center line of the ROW.

These two photos are of the same view - just across the street from the station. One shows the ROW flooded. This happens occasionally - and is not due to the beaver dam further south.

It is being constructed by the Albion historical society. (Albion was, effectively, the end of the line for the WW&F.)

I *think* Matt meant WW&F #7 photoshopped as #11.

No engines survive, except #9.

There is a *rumor* that one engine ended up in China bog, but that has been debunked many times.

The boiler for one of the engines (someone here will know) ended up as a culvert much further north on the ROW.

The only known cars are coach 3, flat 118, box 309 and box 312. We own or lease 3 of those four (box 312 is owned by Boothbay Railway Village.) There is also the Flanger being constructed in Albion using some of the original hardware.

There is an original WW&F handcar somewhere - which museum has that (or is it privately owned?)

It is possible that a boxcar or two may still exist as a barn somewhere, or maybe even another handcar.

I'd like to see us try to acquire and preserve what (little) is left of some of the remaining buildings. Some of the stations still stand (and have been converted into houses.) There is some parts left of the Week's Mills freight house and water tank (but both heavily modified.) There are probably other examples.

Hi Matt,

I don't think there are any firm plans - just lots of opinions.

We tend to think of things in 5-10 year increments and it will be at least 10 years (barring one of us hitting the lottery) before we will need to decide what piece of rolling stock (if any) we should build next.

Thanks for all the feedback.

I happened to make it to Sheepscot yesterday and everyone liked the new way I'm bringing the posts over. I even got two requests to convert specific conversations and categories.

The process is somewhat manual and pretty time consuming - but I'll get it done, eventually.

We got confused.

We were so taken aback by the stunning replica of the Head Tide water tank at Sheepscot, we *thought* that's where we were supposed to cut.  :)

In seriousness, the weather forecast called for a day of freezing rain, so it was decided to cut for the new carhouse/septic project. Despite the valiant efforts of Zack and a new propane-fired torch/weed-burner, we could not get the already-amassed piles of brush to light. (Too damp and too much snow on top.) We're hoping that the dryer and warmer weather predicted for this week will help make burning these piles possible sometime soon.

Almost all the required trees have now been removed so that grading can begin.

Other activities included Jason working on an axle for the railcar.

Oh, and the weather was completely fine after about 8:30am - no freezing rain or drizzle.

Yes, Merry Christmas to all!
Thanks to everyone who keeps the WW&F running, and those who keep the conversation going in our on-line community.
