Smelt? Love fried smelt.  I wonder if we could get Fred to do a smelt fry during the Spring work weekend?  Wayne and I could bring the Black & Tan.

Oh well!  There goes my Hawaii Ski Trip.  Darn, I guess I'll to go Blue Mountain.  If this global warming keeps up, then perhaps the next rolling stock to build should be flanger and maybe a snow plow.  I can see it now, #9, #10 and #11 plowing the main.

Actually Wayne, Mauna Kea, on the big island, has snow on it. At 13,796 ft., people hike up there and ski.  By the way, Mauna Kea means White Mountain.

Philly has had 42.5" of snow in five (5) days.  Enough!

Love the engine, but that caboose is surely not an Brit Brake Van (LOL).  Would be at home on any Maine Two-footer.  Must be more than a couple S.R. & R.L. fans on the other side of the pond.

Tiger Boom Mowers and Alamo Boom Mower web sites.  If we could figure out exactly what we could build our own railway ROW mower from.  It would make it easier to search for a used one.  Check out their ditcher attachment.

The Flail Wagon in the video is just what we need.  Maybe if we asked them, they would give us a copy of their plans.  Then we could build a "Big Joe" from their plans, as modified for our use.  The weed sprayer would be a nice addition.

I just e-mailed them for a copy of their plans.  We'll see.

I think that before we start dreaming of boom mowers, etc., we need to rent a stump grinder and prepare our ROW for mechanical means of mowing.  I'll check the government surplus people to see what's out there in the way of mowers and grinders.

A few of cases of water-gel (Tovex) and a roll or two of primer cord would be a good start.  We just need good "shooter".  There should be some locally.  Try Dragon Cement.

Museum Discussion / Coal Brick Project
« on: January 01, 2010, 03:15:39 PM »
It is my intention to do a coal brick making project during our Spring work end.  It is a job I can do from my scooter.  I'll bring the molds and gloves appropriate for the task.  Now, if someone at the museum can collect a couple buckets of saw dust and a bag of cement, we'll be all set.  I am also looking into a coal briquette machine.

The formula is quite simple.  6 Parts coal dust, 1 part saw dust (optional), 1/4 part cement and enough water to mix.  Then you put the mix in a mold to shape it, un-mold and set to dry.

Approximately how many pounds of coal dust and fines do we generate annually?

Great video.  My brother trained at Camp Claiborne and was later transferred to the 88th. Div. When the war ended in Italy, he was transferred back to a railway battalion, as a brakeman, to help rebuild the Italian railroads.  He didn't return until 1946 and went to work on the C.B.& Q.

Somewhere, I've seen a mention that one of #9's Portland sisters may still exist.  Is this a rumor or a fact?  Anyone know?

It was still there on the Monday of the Fall Work Weekend.  My wife and I drove up there to see Albion on the Northern Division.  Some sort of "critter" parked in front of the depot building.

They could move one rail over 32 1/2 inches and make it Maine's newest 2 footer.  LOL

On our way at 0600 (Weds.) and will make Thursday my "keep the wife happy day".  Take her to Bar Harbor for lunch and some shopping.  See you all Friday morning.  Maybe I can Hy-Rail my mobility scooter while there.   LOL
