General Discussion / In Qatar, 4 new rail lines, 98 stations and 300kms...

Caught this in the local newspaper and then found it online. Several rail projects are underway in Qatar, some of which are scheduled for completion by the start of the 2022 World Cup. But the most amazing will be the line connecting Qatar to Bahrain which will include a 40km stretch across water!

General Discussion / Bob Krist's New Hope & Ivyland No 40 video

All, enjoy this gorgeous piece produced and shot by my cohort Bob Krist. Most of you will recall Bob as host of the Restoration Stories program on PBS. In this 5-minute clip, Bob follows the NH&I crew as they bring the 40 back into service after her latest 1472 day overhaul. Very nice job by GM Paul Harland describing not only the process, but why we love steam. Everything you will see in this video was shot using Nikon DSLR's, D5100 and D7000.

CONGRATS to the shop crew at the Valley RR! First photo is the aftermath of the fire at the Knox & Kane RR in PA. Locomotive was then purchased by the VRR for $100k and brought to CT to be restored and morphed into a New Haven engine -which in addition to EVERYTHING else, meant rebuilding the tender and giving the engine an appropriate looking NH cab. Second photo was taken yesterday (11-15-2011) in Essex, CT. GREAT job guys!

General Discussion / Villagephotos.com outage

In case anyone was wondering why pictures in many threads here suddenly vanished last week, they are actually "hosted" on a separate photo web site called Villagephotos. I've been using Villagephotos.com as my image host for 8 years and except for a few brief outages, they've been great. Not ALL images have been affected, some are in fact hosted right here. However, the following message appeared on the Villagephotos web site Sunday morning:

We apologize that we are experiencing a temporary system-wide outage. We are moving to a new internet provider, hoping early this week.
We have been unable to get into our email help desk because of this outage, and we apologize for the lack of communication.
