General Discussion / Re: Standard gauge motor car available
« on: May 10, 2016, 08:41:19 PM »
Mike,

The price is right.  If you think the museum folks would allow it to be re-gauged and repaired, and you are willing to pick it up, and if no one else wants to do it, I will bring a small trailer this fall and take it back to VA to work on during the winter.

Let me know your thoughts.

Soooooo......... we should all keep an eye out for the clapper with the cracked eye that has flown the coop?  Perhaps it has crossed over to the other side of the tracks?

A hardy "Well Done Wayne!"

Good to see you are recovered from your SWW and busy again.

It seems like each Work Weekend the Virginia contingent (Bill) and the Pennsylvania (Wayne & Bernie) contingent magically arrive at almost the same time.  I know it has worked out that way for the last 3, 4 or more Work Weekends it seems.  Dwight, it will be good to see you before your dental (I think I remembered that correctly) drama.

I will be there sometime after lunch on the 27th and will be able to help if the trucks are still coming in.  I will try and push my travel times to arrive as early as I can.

Museum Discussion / Re: Hand Spiking vs. Power Spiking
« on: April 19, 2016, 10:22:32 AM »
Well, it seems that hand spiking is the way to go.  I must admit, though I miss more times then I hit, it makes me feel good that I can still swing a spike maul.  I know that we have a few volunteers that really impress me with their capabilities with a maul.

Dwight W. found and donated the rail drill.  What a boon to making joint bars fit.  The Dana crew now goes a lot faster.  Perhaps the next step is an attachment for a jack hammer to drive the spikes.  That would help those of us who are getting a little long in the tooth for swinging a spike maul.

Major contributions to the Grant Application came from Jason (technical and financial), Steve P. (Museum philosophy), John McN (grammar and punctuation {which included lots of hyphens}) and several others who made what we hope will be a successful application.  It was like everything we do, a teamwork effort.

Will the woods track still be a part of the north yard goal this SWW?

There was also a great two page article by Jason Ed and Steve in the current NRHS News Letter.  The electronic copy is now out and can be viewed on page 13 & 14 at: https://admin.nrhs.com/NRHSNews/NRHS_News_April_2016.pdf .

I hope that is the plan.  I know Mike wants it to happen.

When, during the long winter away between the FWW and SWW, you continually think of what projects will fit into your car when the SWW finally rolls around.
