Work and Events / Work Car 1009 ("ROWMOW1") - Official Work Thread
« on: September 05, 2011, 07:13:36 PM »
It's official. I have finally started work on the car. I have been designing it in my head and finally picked up the wood to start the frame.

The wheelsets are from a donation during the Annual Picnic. I have taken pictures and studied different photos trying to find out if the frame that was on the wheels was an original hand crank car and I have determined they are not. The wheels are smaller than hand car size and the frame is in the wrong location. The hand cranks had frames on the outside of the wheels and this was on the inside.

I also had slid the mower into place to get an idea if I was headed in the right direction

I carefully removed the old wooden frame from the axles, unfortunately breaking 2 bolts. I set the frame aside, and will return it to the museum for safe storage for future reference. After the frame removal, I inspected the wheelsets. Interesting grease cups.

One thing that puzzles me about the grease cups. When the frame is above the axle, the cup is pointing down away from the axle.

Lastly, I am making the new frame 2 feet longer. I cut some handles into the frame members for (hopefully it's not too heavy!) turning the car to mow the other side of the tracks. Should be easily done on a crossing.

Return of the rails has print #4 available now. The WW&F museum gift shop has acquired some for sale. The proof hanging in the giftshop looks great.

Museum Discussion / Missing Wheels
« on: July 30, 2011, 07:47:22 PM »
Upon my arrival to the museum today, one thing I noticed was a stack of wheels that I had placed near the machine shop was missing. They were to be used on the mower car I am constructing. Due to this, the mower is now on hold. It was a matched set of 4 wheels, very little wear, with one wheel having a bead of weld around the tire.

The museum is a volunteer driven organization that relys on donations such as these wheels to complete smaller projects. Saving the funds for larger projects. Removal of the wheels puts my project behind and possibly derails it.

Volunteers / Brush Cutting (2011)

* Jason attempted to rig up one of our lawn mowers so that it could be suspended and be used to mow the ROW next to the track.  The mower was one that has been not working well for a while.  The results were less than stellar.  The mower may be destined for the transfer station.

Jason should work on the parts I need for mine and we'd have something.

Work and Events / MVRS Charter - Steam in the Snow 3/5/2011
« on: March 05, 2011, 09:30:55 PM »
Ok. Now for some pictures. First, mine. Taken with a cell phone, they are not that great, but are used in this instance to show those who could not make it what you missed.

First. 4 of us went out and did some chipping at Sutters. After 20 minutes, we returned and got some help. Here is a shot of the guys at work. That is smoke from the 10 filling the air.

From the crossing toward the train.

End of the trip at Alna Center.

General Discussion / South African steam locomotives scrapped

A priceless collection of steam locomotives has been cut up for scrap in Johannesburg after suffering irreparable damage at the hands of scrap thieves.

The 27 locomotives, which belonged to South African National Rail and Steam Museum, a nonprofit preservation group, were gifts from the former South African Railways and various mining houses and industries that had once used them on their private railways.

I wonder how many were the Baldwins we talked about a few years ago. Too bad.

Monson Railroad / Seen in Abbot
« on: September 11, 2010, 07:16:47 PM »
Cliff, perhaps you can answer this question for me. I was in Monson a few weeks ago for work. I made a brief appearance, dropping what I needed to and returning to my area. I passed a garage of some sort in Abbot (on the right just past the Junction headed towards Monson) and there was a locomotive of some sort, no doubt a recreation of one, facing the road. In a quick look, I noticed it had road wheels under it. Was this some kind of parade float that was created or just what did I see? I took a picture on the return trip with my phone, but it did not come out the best. Here is the shot

And I cropped the above photo to get this

Bridgton & Saco River Railway / Postcard Placement
« on: July 11, 2010, 07:13:53 PM »
I am at a loss as to the exact location this postcard was made from. I have 2 choices for you to ponder.

1st. Is this train Approaching South Bridgton from the South? This is the omne I think, going by the land.

Or is this train approaching Bridgton from the south, and the excavation is for the Harrison Branch?

Probably other possibilities out there, and I'd love to hear them, but these are the two I thought of.

**Edit**

Helps if I add a photo.

Bridgton & Saco River Railway / More Photo Help
« on: April 27, 2010, 08:03:15 PM »
OK. Here is another photo I acquired a while ago. I am unsure of the location so I'll ask it here.

I am looking for any possibilities, but I think my answer may lie out of State (Edaville). So anyone with info or even a guess would be appreciated.

Bridgton & Saco River Railway / Perleys Mills Photo?
« on: March 29, 2010, 07:21:27 PM »
Ok. We had this discussion before but I can't find it. Anyhow, I purchased this photo a while ago, and have no idea where the station is. I think it is Perleys Mills but am more than likely wrong, due to the lay of the land. The scan does not provide all the details I can see in my copy so here is what else I can tell you.The switchstand next to the man on the ground is for a siding across from the station. The track is straight with a slight curve to the right as it passes the mast of the switch stand.

Now I am wondering, could this be a Bridgton Bound train in the morning, and this is South Bridgton? It does not look right for Ingalls Rd.

Museum Discussion / Spring Cleaning
« on: March 07, 2010, 09:14:29 PM »
I was doing a little spring cleaning of my computer, and came across a picture I took probably 3 or 4 years ago. It got me into the mood to find more.
