I have been following your work on other sites.  Alan Downey and I have been making patterns for the #11 project for years and they have been shown on this site.  I would love to see some of these castings made so the actual construction of the locomotive could begin.  I am also working on a whistle project where I will need the parts cast in a high pressure steam bronze.  Will you have that capability?  Would you also be able to cast a complex three chime flat top whistle bell in a horizontal plane?

I believe that if Hansel could have, he would have put it in the car and brought it home.  He really liked the thing.  Theoretically it could probably be made to run with a thorough rebuilding.  Since I have no knowledge of hoist engines, I was fascinated with the way the engine was reversed.  There was only one cam per cylinder and reversing was accomplished by a reversing piston which changed the flow of steam to the feed pipes to the cylinders.  The coal bin and water supply were in the locomotive part.  Someone put a lot of thought into it.  Hansel and I had our own version of "Jason's nightmare" comments.

Since so much of this flat belt machinery is showing up, I wonder if anyone knows where I can purchase about 6 feet of 2 1/2" X 1/4" of belt for my ancient metal lathe?

Is there any way the whole building could be brought back?

If the whistle is too shrill for modern ears, you could make chambers of different length out of sheet brass and press them into the bell and it would sound similar to the one on #10.  It would take trained eyes to see the difference.

That whistle looks great and is unique in its design.  I can't wait to hear it on #9.

Wow, those castings look great even in their rough state.  You should cast a second set and put them for sale in the gift shop.  It will be great to see a locomotive with an original style whistle.  Hats off to Alan.

Harold, Alan,

I am an advocate of the brad method and when making core boxes, I use wallboard screws to keep everything in place.

Jason,

When we came up for the work weekend, you mentioned you were going to talk to the foundry about getting some castings made for #11.  Has anything transpired since then?

Harold,

Again, super work.  A while back Jason sent me the plans for this part and I am studying  how you are making it and how it will be pulled from the sand.  Are you going to core in the washout holes or just figure that will be drilled in after the fact?

Jock, thanx for the compliment but there are more notable people who lurk in this forum and do so much at the WW&F that deserve an article on them more than  do I.  I am a general jack-of-all-trades with too many irons in the fire and wish I could concentrate on just one.  Right now I am painting MINERSVILLE platform signs which will hopefully be done for our Santa Train Trips this Saturday.  Hopefully I will get Hansel's whistle bell on 113. I am also doing a lot of the behind the scenes work, mostly on the computer and phone for these trips.  After that, two foundry patterns for 113.  Hopefully I can get back to the #11 project after that.

Yes,

About two or three times a year Mal and I talk on the phone and I have a rough idea of what will be in the restoration part.  Whether or not that it has passed into history, Mal paid for #10's current Vulcan nose plate and I did the pattern work and polishing.
