Stephen,

Really great photos.  I love everyone you do.  Was the Model T railcar there at all?

Congratulations Jason and Brian and everyone who helped with this boiler.  I know how proud you guys must feel on such a milestone accomplishment.  I hope that this is the first of many boilers and complete locomotives which will come out of this shop.  I had a walking on air experience this weekend, so I know how you guys feel.

Now that work has resumed on #9, who is working on what on the railcar?

General Discussion / Re: What if.............
« on: March 01, 2009, 12:09:20 PM »
The following is my opinion only from my observations and working with the WW&F folks.

The WW&F is run by a very active board of directors who have created their own "box" or set of rules by which the railroad would be operated.  So far this has worked for the railroad and has created the atmosphere we all love at the railroad.  For the most part I agree with an active board of directors (some operations I am familiar with only have a board of directors in name only) and their policies.

Bringing outside equipment to the railroad can create a number of problems, liability being one that comes to mind first.  As soon as an exception is made, then others will want to bring their stuff.  Then people will want to leave their stuff there, and soon the place becomes a junk yard.  By the time such a locomotive is built, the RR may be under compliance and will the locomotive or cars qualify?  I'm sure there are others up there who could add many more things to this list.

Since you are dreaming about a locomotive, why focus on your own and apply your talents to the construction of #11?  It is going to take quite a few  people to get this locomotive built in a timely manner.  Become part of the team where the groundwork and engineering have been laid.

Have you seen the costs of making any parts for your locomotive?  I have said before in this forum that the costs to make anything new will knock your socks off and then some unless you have access to some junk locomotives which could become a parts source.

I know it is fun to dream, but I think it is better to jump in and work with a suitable project which has been started.

I am not making patterns for the pedestals and journal boxes.  If these parts are being cast, someone else is making the patterns.  I am assuming that these are being fabbed in some way.  Maybe someone else up there can fill us in on how these parts are being made.

On Leon's railcar, some sort of easily removable guards could be put in place to keep people from falling out.  I don't think he would approve of it being downgraded to work status if a sedan were made.  I know I wouldn't.

Mike,

Thanx for posting the picture of the wheel center pattern.  I'm hoping the next one will be the driver center pattern.  Great photos Gordon, Mike and Steve.

It is amazing what is being done at the WW&F shops.  Each person adds their own talents and cumulatively the whole job gets done.  The whole process seems slow, but each step requires careful planning and measuring.  I really appreciate all the planning that went into the "ring of fire" assembly, and of course, all the machining to make all the parts fit perfectly.  Keep up the good work.

Now, like all the guys who start dreaming about the next locomotive, I will throw out a suggestion for the next Model T railcar:  How about a single seat pick-up vehicle similar to RGS #1 at the Ridgeway Museum, or the work goose at the CRRM, except give it that distinctive "Maine Look".  It should be aged by letting all the dents in the olde parts and paint it a flat black, so it would look like something that was just wisked out of the past after it spent several years out doing maintenance work.  The tool space would just be rough boards, and it would be great for doing trackwork.

Like all railroad preservation projects, this took alot of time and effort on many people's parts and an extended thank you is on the RYPN forum.  Thanx also to all who have commented.

Now it's time to get back to number 11's drive wheel centers.

All you people up there are doing a super job and the extension looks great.  From my perspective and from what I am doing currently (caregiving along with my wife for my mother-in-law which is almost 24/7), appreciate that you have the time to do this work.  There are so many things which can keep one away from doing what they like (I'm not looking for a pity party here--it's just life).  I'm glad that things are always moving in a positive, forward way on the WW&F.

Sandy River & Rangeley Lakes Railroad / Model of #10 for sale on ebay
« on: January 14, 2009, 08:33:31 PM »
I just ran into a photo of a model of #10 which is for sale on ebay.  It looks reasonably good to my eyes. Scale-? Gauge?  Maybe someone who lives in that area can look it up and let us know more about it, or someone registered for ebay can throw a few questions at the seller.  ebay #290286590453 or just look up Sandy River.

Mike,

Again thanx for posting the pictures of the tires.  Somehow I wish I was born in Maine where I could be closer to the action and do more grunt work on this equipment.

Bernie

Guys,

Even though I know what tires look like, when someone has a chance, I would like to see someone post a photo of them.  Thanx in advance.

Guys,

How far along is the WW&FRR railcar?  Did the tires come in and if so, have they been shrunk on?

I believe that the CC&VRR is built on the standard gauge Midland Terminal right of way.

When I was a volunteer at the WK&SRR, I made a wooden number plate which was painter red and green and clipped over the locomotive's regular number plate.  It had about eight "spider legs"  made out of 1/8" wire pushed into holes on the side of the plate which also rested against the smoke box door.  This kept the wreath from touching any hot metal.  The whole wreath assembly could be made in the shop and clipped on the locomotive in 15 seconds.  I believe they are still using it.  You can see it on one of the other photo sites.
