Sandy River & Rangeley Lakes Railroad / Re: Car #33
« on: June 30, 2021, 12:56:15 PM »
Ex Bridgeton boxcar, I believe #54. Edaville converted it to a coach with longer roof, platforms, and windows.  It came to Phillips 10 or 11 years ago as 'junk' from MNG. It was found to be in decent shape , no windows or seats tho. We put trucks under it, I built a set of benches, and we used it as an excursion car. It's number 33 is in line with the SR&RL passenger car numbering. 32 being the exMNG, ex ex EDA excursion car 104.

That would be the original as built ladders, each rung being bolted directly to the car side. The US Safety Appliances standard ladders would be mounted on the left side of the ends.

Awesome.  Maybe we call it Wilma in honor of the donor, Wilmar Sugar.

Sandy River & Rangeley Lakes Railroad / Re: Signal at Phillips depot

There's actually a photo on Ebay now which shows the operating lever located just north of the depot. Search- Sandy River & Rangeley Lakes Railroad photo 15.  Zoom in on the platform and you'll see the lever attached to a big gear wheel with a cable heading upwards toward the north. The cable ran over two poles, one taller than the other, then across the track to the signal.

Trucks are still under coach 18/6.  17/5 hasn't been restored yet, still has a long way to go.
I own a house in Avon, just over the line from Phillips village.  I have been told that either coach 17 or 18 lived in my side yard for time!

The hulks of B&SR 17 and an Edaville flat w/ platforms, which was loaded on top of 17, went to Phillips about the mid'90's. I have no idea why.  They were in very bad shape when they showed up.  7-8 years of soggy pine needle build up really took it's toll on the wood. 17 was missing everything above the belt rail.
Late "90's the trucks were salvalged from the hulks and put under SR&RL coach 6. The car was so bad it literally fell apart as we jacked it up.
4 steel end platforms and 2 cars worth of truss rods were put behind the roundhouse.

I'm planning on Fri - Mon. May be able to do Thurs also. I'd like to work on the track laying end as I did Sat of last fall; placing ties, installing and removing insta-track. I'll also do my part and bang a few spikes plus anything else that needs doing at the railhead.
Here's to seeing and hearing #9 at Rt 218 this fall!  We can do it!
