Well I had thought about that, but I think we'd want our crews to stay hydrated!

It always used to be a 730 departure, then things got "delayed" if the train left at 9 like "the recent norm" almost half the day is gone.

A lot of the railroads equipment have split knuckles, it's how we've been coupling it to equipment with a "bent special link" with the exception to #52 we just remove the coupler and direct link and pin couple it. It works very well. Just need for extra precaution when coupling. (The use of a wooden stick to hold up the link). I'll try to remember to get a photo of our link.

So as of right now the red hopper is staying as it is for use of "flooding new track with stone" when the rebuild of the grey hopper commences it will be for "spot ballasting"  but it will take some time to rebuild it for that purpose..

Hi all, so unfortunately I'm terrible at keeping people informed on here (work first type later) BUT here we finally are.
I've adopted the hoppers and have plans for one of them (the rougher of the two) and will update as I can moving forward with it once ideas are finalized and work begins.
so far we've used the red hopper 2x since arrival. The first time was during FWW to test it, and 2nd time was 11/09 as Bill has posted.(thank you Bill)
The way the hopper dumps is the car is divided in half and each end is operated manually, UNFORTUNATELY it dumps on both sides which is problematic if you only want stone on one side. When we went out on 11/09 I simply blocked the gates on one side to block any flow. which worked well for the most part but was a pain to remove after the fact.
Another challenge is that it only dumps stone on the outside. So some manual shoveling is still required until we figure something out. The change of couplers is going to be a real challenge but we will steadily work on it. The next step I have is to add actual safety chains that will be in the next week or so, I will do my best to keep everyone updated as we continue on!

Trust me Ted, albeit progress is slow (mainly due to my schedule) we haven't given up or stopped completely.

The No.10 crew had great success today! But only 1 photo.
We got the connecting rods off the crosshead.
Built a pulling jig to separate the piston rod from the crosshead safely. Which we did.
We then pulled the cylinder heads off for removal of the pistons. Removed said pistons and care and protected them. (Wrapped up and set in the cab with labels.) (Please dont touch)
Cleaned, quick inspection, and lubrication of the cylinder bores, and put the covers back in place. Put rags in the hole where the piston rod passed through the rear of the cylinder.
Reconnected the connecting rods along with the keys as to not lose them. Overall great progress was made. Absolutely proud of the care that showed up today to help. New volunteer Shawn Doyle, and Benton Hayes. (Dan showed up late though and left early. Maybe he needed a nap ;) ) all in all it was a great day! Next up is measuring for new rings and grinding the saddle to smokebox adapter casting!
See you on the rails!!

Volunteers / Re: MANAGER NEEDED FOR ONGOING ISSUE...

No Jeff I will not, but my goal is to make parking a lot simpler, clearer, and more efficient than it is now. I know I have a lot to do to get it in shape, along with my other projects, but I know I can do it and it'll all be worth it! Hopefully there will be some change so everything is going to be set up a bit better, and not really "willy nilly" for a lack of better term.

I will be there all 4 days for spiking and lining im sure Joe or whoever is in charge will have me spiking with the crew. I'll see you all there!

General Discussion / Re: Who Am I? or, Let's Introduce Ourselves
« on: July 28, 2017, 12:45:08 AM »
hello to any one who is reading this. i live in west gardiner and i'm 14. i try to go to the ww&f every chance i get. i am probably the youngest trainee at the moment and its fun working/training.its part of my bloodline.(as i like to call it) my uncle and grand father got me into going down there and it just sucked me in to the world of trains. my uncle is leon weeks of which you know who built the model t rail car. (i helped out every once in a while not really knowing what i was doing to help.) i've helped work on TOM,#9,the upper yard, the Whitefield section house, car barn, replace culverts, lay track and much more. and almost every time i visit i hear people say "this is the generation that will get us to albion". of which i think is true. some people say "well why don't you invest in those automatic rail layers and track replacers". and i always reply with "its a museum it supposed to represent the way they did it by hand they didn't have drills, automatic tie replacers,ETC." and thats about it on my life so far so now you know me.
ok so now this is a bit of an update 2 years later. my name is still Bryce but things are different now. i still try to get down as much as possible (almost have my licence) and still done those things i wrote in the past but now im on a new leg of my musuem journey. im 16 and a fully qualifyed brakeman and i just started shadowing on firing but i need to have my interview on firing. im just going to throw this out there but everyone at the musuem, new and old members, you all have made a huge impact on my life and made it so much more fun. also quick little thing, leon is my great uncle not my regular uncle. just putting that out there. but ive made tons of new friends at the museum and i consider everyone there a part of my family.
