There's the area in question.

When I was visiting home, my parents and I drove by this area in our search for any remnants of the Eustis RR/SRRL. I was quite surprised to learn later about the Navy facility.

Has anyone considered contacting the reserve units of the Navy Seabees or Army engineers to help with skilled manpower? I spent a couple of years drilling with the Seabees out by Boston, and a job like this would have been right up their alley.

Thanks to Andrew we get the trip into that beautiful Gulf Stream gorge, where an old man like me couldn't go.  He also found much more rail still in place in North Anson.  Those relic pieces of the Gulf Stream Trestle are a fantastic find.  Andrew, there weren't any bugs there yesterday.

Happily, during my entire trip, the bugs were only a bother when I was in Bingham asking about the spur and when I was standing on that trestle foundation.

Duncan is correct, you found coal ash and cinders.  They came from the ash pan and smoke box of a steam locomotive.  They are often found where a water tank was located.  When the crew stopped to take water they would spark the engine, sending cinders out the bottom of the smoke box.  Cinders also came from the ash pan drop.  One use for cinders on the r-o-w was to spread them on a fill to help hold the soil together.  Most steam era yards have cinders all over the place.

Ah! OK. That really makes sense.  ;D Glad to learn about another aspect of steam technology. Can't say that I saw any trace of the water tower, but I didn't look very carefully after my 6 mile hike. I better add that info on my video.

Good day all. I've run across a future area of exploration and wanted to see if anyone else could fill me in.

The Ray Lumber Co had a small amount of track that is just a short distance from the Kathadin Iron works, which also had a railroad that ran down to Brownville Junction (a place my father lived for a few years long before I was born).

Does anyone know the condition of the old ROW of the Katahdin RR?

I figure if I was to hike it, I would start at Brownville junction, from the Iron works hike over to Indian pond, and then trace the route south to the remains of the lumber mill and ghost town, south to the CN, and back to Brownville Junction.

Andrew,
Your pictures and research have answered questions I had many years ago. Back in the '70's and early '80's, my family and friends vacationed in the area of Harmony on the shores of Great Moose Lake. I noticed the ROW but had no details about it and the folks we knew from that area had little knowledge of or interest in railroads.
Thanks for filling in a few gaps.

You're welcome. I'm rather surprised that I found as much as I did considering that I had only cursory knowledge of the line and only vague knowledge of where the ROW went. Researching this after I located it didn't bring up very much info. It was quite a fun investigation.
