Work and Events / Re: Moving passenger cars from MNGRR to WWFRY

That's good news for both Collections. No private collection or amusement park for any of the Maine 2ft equipment. And most should be under cover by this winter.
Thank you everyone who made this miracle happen..........again.

Museum Discussion / Compatibility between 60 cm and 24 in gauge
« on: June 03, 2019, 08:57:04 AM »
This will be my first post in a very long time, but I have technical question that was brought up last night by a friend. Can 60 cm (WW1 Trench Railroad) gauge cars and locomotives run on 24" gauge track? He thought that the 23.622 track gauge would be in tolerance to the nominal 24" but that the wheel back to back spacing might not let the wheels pass through a turnout. Are there any other issues that would be a problem?

Bridgton & Saco River Railway / Re: Narrow Gauge Convention Tour

Thanks Dana and Duncan:
Its been too long since I followed Mike Fox and his pickup following the grade. I drove through from Hancock Lake to Reed's Mill too long ago and rode it on my Mountain Bike as well. The bridge's back then were substantial but had a high angle to get on them that only a high clearance vehicle could clear. Back in East Hiram the girder bridge to the grade is now closed and access is via a cut in the grade almost at Bridgeton Jct on Rte 113. Some of the grade is visible on the side of the large gravel pit. Bridgeton Jct access is probably better from Hiram, crossing the Maine Central bridge to the station site.
I have an open house next Tuesday and Wednesday, and wanted some up to date road conditions for those few who might look for signs of the B&SR on their way to the Convention. I always use 113 to below Sebago Lake on my way into Maine from North Conway.

General Discussion / Re: Who Am I? or, Let's Introduce Ourselves

Hello to all. I have read the Forum for years but am not much of a poster. Helped out on work weekends for many years from the Trestle to before Top of the Mountain. I'm a narrow gauge fan since about age 15 and have traced the SR&RL and WW&F since the 1970's. Even camped out at Salmon Hole on a bike trip in High School. Today I am more a D&RGW NG fan and modeller with a layout over the garage in Glen NH. I am now Treasurer of the North Conway Model Railroad Club and host each week at Conway Scenic.
ps: I'm a life member of the WW&F also.

Bridgton & Saco River Railway / Narrow Gauge Convention Tour
« on: August 10, 2016, 12:50:13 PM »
Hello all:
        This will be my first post in a long time but here goes;
With the Narrow Gauge Convention coming up next month is it possible to still drive the ROW from Sandy Creek to Rankin's Mill (with a small detour at Hancock Lake)? I last went with Dana Deering and Mike Fox over part of the ROW and had to swim my jeep across a certain beaver pond that actually dammed both sides of the fill. Any info to tell visitors? I have an open house in Glen NH on Tuesday and Wednesday, and it might be good to know what is open. Back some years ago you could drive through from Rankins Mill (Narrow Gauge Rd) through to Hancock Lake but the steel bridge at Twin Lake had a steep ramp on each side that would stop any regular car. Access to the grade just beyond Bridgeton Jct is the small opening off Rte 113 that cuts through the grade for access to the gravel pit above. The bridge in East Hiram has been closed.

Thanks for any info.

Duncan, Mike, Dana:
Is it time to plan another trip to the B&SR ROW? I thoroughly enjoyed the trip last Fall. Just before Thanksgiving last year I explored the little road that leaves 302 just before the B&SR crosses at Bridgeton Jct. It cuts through the ROW and then swings left and on it for a short stretch. This is the climb up Smalls Mt in East Hiram. The road swings back across the grade to an extensive gravel pit at the top. The grade with some moss covered ties can be seen at this point. This road connects with the road at Scribner's Mill. The grade continues as an ATV, walking trail from here to Rankins. I continued to Rankins Mill which you could see clearly with the foliage gone. It looks like much of the mill is still there although much modified. The grade past the Summit and to Hancock Pond should be less muddy than the northern stretch. I'll be up at Alna for the work session, maybe that's the time to organize.

Bridgton & Saco River Railway / Re: Field Trip
« on: October 31, 2008, 08:55:53 AM »
I would like to thank Mike Fox for arranging this field trip. We had a great group of people along with a wealth of knowlege. Too bad we had a monsoon the night before. Not only had the beavers done their work before the Great Cut, but the ATV divots had filled with water. My jeep had no real problem but Mike's 2 wheel truck seemed a little low in the water at times. I was glad when we reached the working gravel pit before Pearly's and a good road. I did not want to backtrack.
Thanks again Mike. How about a trip next spring?

Mike:
What time to you want to meet at the Chamber Building? I'm interested in driving over from N. Conway. I have driven my jeep through from Sandy Creek to Rankins Mill several years ago. I will bring my copy of Jone's book and a mileage chart of the distances between stations starting at Sandy Creek through to Rankins Mill.
