To the dedicated Volunteers of the WW&F Railway:
I can't thank you enough for everything you have done to make Sunday's charter a huge success.  As an organizer, I will say that I was impressed with how the day went.  I got very positive feedback from the attendees and that was because of all your hard work, creativity and generosity.  I hope to have the Dynamo Production video uploaded to YouTube in the coming weeks.  It was a pleasure working with all of you and I hope to have an opportunity to do this again some day.

Note: There were 14 volunteers helping last Sunday and many more worked to set things up in advance.  It was a great event to show our museum to new people.  We look forward to seeing the video. Some stills have already been published on FB and more will be posted soon.

It wouldn't be so bad.  Many of us miss having Harry's cat Buttercup around the shop, she was friendly and kept the place mouse free.  She was a WW&F volunteer for 16 years starting when she was a kitten.  Harry used to put her in his coat pocket when he walked down the Cross Road because she didn't like the sound of water running through the old culvert from the fire pond.  She outgrew that fear later in life.

Railroads often had round house dogs or cats, they show up in old photos of the roundhouse or shop crew.

Museum Discussion / Museum - 25th Anniversary T shirts

Shirt will have a heritage view of Bay 1 from 1991 on the back with a matching now shot below. Above the photos will be the wording: "Celebrating 25 years 1989-2014"  The front will feature a nice photo of Harry Percival on a velocipede in Sheepscot yard with the words underneath "Founder, Harry E. Percival, Jr.".

Strong winds and sleet hitting the west windows most of the night, snow plow wakes us up at 6.  Ok, get up to feed the purring stock.  Check the weather station, it's 24 degrees.  Wait, what? ... there's 2 inches of sleet with a coating of snow.  Oh well get some oatmeal.  Look outside at 7 and there are two Robins in the dooryard looking confused.  I know how they feel.  The Easter Bunny could get lost in this.

Press Release -

Railway officials, in consult with local authorities have decided to establish a special pro-active group of volunteers.  The group will be trained to respond to situations where quick work will avert problems.  The elite group will be known as the Fast Action Response Team and will have a manager with background in handling tough situations.

So, beginning this Summer, if there's a problem remember to call the guys from F.A. ...  uh, nevermind

Been some Winter, eh??

Yet another below zero morning, -12 to be exact.  Cleaned out the wood stove and took the ashes out to the pit, walking through on snow that's stronger that concrete.  You could park a Portland Forney on it, in fact the old 14" deep foot prints could trap an elephant so it's safer to walk on top.  Of course the snow pack makes the shed roof overhang a lot closer to head contact zone ... ouch, I'm awake now!   Well, time to get going.  Hmmm, the truck's tires are stuck in the ice. Rocking it a bit breaks it loose.  Drive to the railroad and pick up the trash from the house and shop.  Quick trip to the transfer station, they accept the trash but won't take the snow in the back of the truck.  This all sounds familiar, how many weeks of it?  Just one question:  Where can I sign up for the Tropical Vortex??

Life in the Polar Vortex -

Up just before 6.  Check the digital weather station and the readout informs that it's -23 outside.  Wait ... what??  Remove glasses, rub eyes and look again. Dang, numbers are still there.  Trek down cellar to check the wood stove.  It still has some fire. Good, kept the house at 64 overnight.  Go for logs in the woodshed, ooops the hatch doors are frozen shut.  Well, plenty of wood in the cellar.  Have some breakfast and check email.  Around 7:30 check outside temps again.  Ok, up to -17, wierd to be happy about numbers getting smaller.  Bundle up and wait about 10 minutes for heat to build up inside coat.  Gotta get going, go out to the garage to get the truck out.  Hmmm, garage door won't lift due to ice along the bottom.  Try to pry it up but the weather strip starts to tear.  Plan B:  Clean snow off the old truck sitting outside.  Door is frozen shut but a little hot water and yanking free it.  Hop in, it cranks slowly but starts, yea!!  Let it warm up a minute and try to put the seatbelt on.  It's stuck, frozen in the roller.  A hard pull brings it out, covered with frost, never seen that before.  Ok, underway now, gotta get some gasoline, first purchase in 2014.  Drive to the Quick Stop where the driveway entrance looks like an olympic slalom course between snow piles.  Fill up the truck and get a bottle of cherry coke from the cooler box but it's warm.  No problem, just dig a hole in the snow in the back of the truck and put the bottle in the 4X8' cooler.  Digging around, wait... whats this??  There's firewood under the snow?  Forgot about that. Oh dang another job when I get home.

Museum Discussion / WW&F Railway and the Maine Two-Footers featured in Voie Etroit magazine.

Last Summer, WW&F member Chris Walker came from the UK to do research on the WW&F and other reborn Maine Two-Footers.  His research was for a feature story in the French magazine Voie Etroite, a full color publication dedicated to narrow gauge railways.  He told me that he wanted to give French railfans a look at the Maine Two-Footers, a subject they don't know very well.

Chris just sent me the Oct. - Nov. 2013 issue of VE and his 6 page article has text with 10 photos covering the WW&F, SR&RL, and MNG.  The nice thing is that the WW&F is on the cover, showing #10 with a southbound mixed train entering Sheepscot yard.  My French is a bit rusty but the article is a nice piece on the Maine Two-Foot museum's with good ink on the WW&F.  The magazine will be at the museum this weekend for everyone to see.  Afterward it will go into the archives.  

Many thanks to Chris Walker for writing a nice article bringing the Maine Two-Footers to life for French railfans, with an emphasis on the WW&F.
