Museum Discussion / WW&F No. 9 Historical Information
« on: December 25, 2019, 07:06:33 AM »
So while it's been some time since I posted up here, with one of my current projects and the fact that the WW&F has the engine in question, I figure this would be the best place to find sources of information and photographs. Now I've been working on producing O Scale narrow gauge kits and detail parts (just look up Lambert Locomotive Works on Facebook to get an idea of the shenanigans I've been up to). Well with all that research I've done, I might as well try to put it to good use and try to educate people as well. So while I'm starting off with a video on the K27 Mudhens of the Denver and Rio Grande, I do want to tackle No. 9's history as well. For those of you familiar with Drachinifel on Youtube, you can get an idea of the format I want to go with from his videos. Ideally if I can do one every month, that would be great but it'll all come down to availability of research materials, photographs to use, and my own personal time to throw the final product together.

So the big question I have is what sort of pictures are floating around of No. 9 during it's long life that I might be able to use for such a video, and what sort of historical and more recent resources (such as knowledge gleaned from her rebuild) that I can tap into to get the ball rolling?

Many thanks in advance.

Museum Discussion / Scale Drawings of No. 10
« on: July 17, 2019, 07:15:33 PM »
So I know it's been a while since I've posted (OK, it's been a REALLY long time) but in that intervening time I've started designing and manufacturing kits in On30. At risk of this being slightly off topic, is there any scale drawings of WW&F No. 10 floating around? If there's at least some drawings with measurements I can do the conversions and at least start doing some design work... Eventually I'd love to do a ready-to-run locomotive, and starting small (both literally and figuratively) seems like a good place to begin what'll likely be a long-term project.

Whimsical Weirdness and Foolery / In the name of Conquest
« on: January 08, 2014, 09:38:25 PM »
Well, a friend of mine sent me this article snippet this afternoon;

Wiscasset and Boothbay Harbor will be getting closer together.
Figuratively speaking, that is.
A plan to add a regional shuttle service from the railroads to Wiscasset and Boothbay Harbor has picked up steam after the Lincoln County Commissioners voted to give the project $1,000 in December.
Lincoln County Planner Robert Faunce said the plan came about late in 2013 after a meeting with the Maine Eastern Railroad (MERR) when it was announced the railroad was tweaking its schedule and adding services, Faunce said.
“Their goal is to to develop as much passenger traffic as possible by making a convenient connection with the Downeaster in Brunswick and adding special events trains to Rockland festivals and an excursion train between Wiscasset and Newcastle and Wiscasset and Bath,” he wrote in an email. “Our local informal committee brought up the idea of a shuttle connection between Wiscasset and Boothbay Harbor as a natural way to increase traffic and the MERR will actually ticket folks between Boston North Station and any intervening station and Boothbay Harbor, if the shuttle becomes a reality.”
The proposed shuttle would travel from Wiscasset to Boothbay Harbor, but a second trolley, which Faunce said would complement the Rocktide Trolley, would take passengers to local hot spots, such as Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, the Railway Museum, the Boothbay Commons, the Boothbay Harbor Country Club and other destinations.
Faunce said Maine Department of Transportation has been asked to foot the bulk of the bill for the service this summer, but some additional supports from local sources would be needed in the form of money for sponsors.
“We have secured some funding from (Lincoln) County, Regional Planning Commission and the Boothbay Harbor Region Chamber of Commerce,” Faunce said. “We will be talking to the Boothbay and Boothbay Harbor selectboards and local institutions and individuals.”
The aim is to have the service start in June with Friday, Saturday and Sunday service, with holidays added on as possible, although no set times or stops have been finalized yet, Faunce said.
“This is an exciting opportunity to create a regional transit infrastructure in Lincoln County,” he said. “It offers the distinct possibility of expanding to other county communities in the future.”

Now, why aren't we getting on board with this? That thousand dollars, coupled with already available track materials would make a great start for a southward extension... I can see it now; 10-some-odd miles of new WW&F trackage along the coast down to Boothbay... With Mike's creativity, James' financial know-how, and some serious ambition, I would call this plan simply...

deh neh

EVIL!!! End overly dry cliche...

Whimsical Weirdness and Foolery / Hypothetical Bus Trip
« on: September 03, 2013, 03:21:03 PM »
Alright, I've got a little "hypothetical" situation for everyone... Let's assume that someone markets a bus trip to one of the scenic operations within an hour or so of, say, Worcester, MA. For kicks and giggles, lets say the Valley Railroad. Assuming the price for the trip, which covers the bus and the ticket on the Valley Railroad, is $55, would you guys think of purchasing a ticket? Of course, this is entirely "hypothetical", but some input would be appreciated. I already got some positive input from the New England and New York Railfan group on Facebook.Using some of that input, I included the River Boat into my calculus... Seriously, thoughts anyone? I know it isn't WW&F related, but I could use the input. Is the price to steep? Any thoughts on the "hypothetical" trip?

General Discussion / NRHS Happenings for the former Depot Foundation crew
« on: November 09, 2012, 09:38:16 AM »
Just to simplify things, I'll quote myself from RYPN;
"The clerk for the ARS helped me by putting the word out on my chapter project, and Phil Johnson of Seven Railroads NRHS emailed me in the hopes I could help him with ideas on how to properly organize the chapter, which he admited had no real direction. After an email discussion, I recieved an email from him where he stated that the majority of the current membership had come to a consensus that they wished me to take over their chapter."
This is in regards to the depot project I was a part of in East Brookfield. Our original intent was to preserve the damaged Boston and Albany depot in East Brookfield. Suffice to say we failed miserably. The RYPN thread is linked below. On a different note, I've really noticed how much of a "geekwad" I was when I first started with the original effort. I'll note I'm lucky I had some people who were willing to provide guidance...

Edit: I forgot to note that the meeting to finalize all of this is Saturday, December 8, 2012 at the Steaming Tender in Palmer.

Other Narrow Gauge / Dugas and Leblanc 0-6-2T Sartola
« on: July 08, 2012, 09:21:59 AM »
The purpose of this topic is to assist me in drawing up a proposal to take up with the group I volunteer with (although we are mostly rigged for "silent running" at the moment) with the intention to determine Sartola's availability for movement or transfer to another group, with the intent of gathering enough support on the local level to move it to a display location (which would need to be determined) in the town of East Brookfield, MA. I have a few potential locations in mind, but this is mostly a paper idea that I wish to develop. Sartola weighs in at 23000 lbs, whic (if I did my math right) equates to 11 1/2 tons. That is under the limit of 40 tons that would require a transport permit in MA, but I have yet to check the Connecticut requirements for a load like this. Then there would be a loading issue. Until I can make a run to Simsbury, CT to get a better look at the running gear, I'm running on the assumption that a crane would be required to unload and load Sartola, should this idea pan out. How should I go about this? I've had some experience in writing, but if this pans out, I'm flying blind on how to move the engine. I am thinking of a craneless solution, but I have some pricing and thinking to do before I consider such an option. I welcome any comments, criticisms and advice.

Monson Railroad / Electric Locomotives in the Monson Slate Quarries
« on: July 07, 2012, 04:49:25 PM »
Reading through Moody's account of his two foot tomfoolery (as recorded in The Maine Two-Footers), he stated how the internal parts of the quarry (i.e the mines and tunnels) were home to two foot gauge electric locomotives. However, he didn't descend to the mines to document them, on part due to a rickety elevator. Were the locomotives ever documented in some form? What happened to this operation? Is there anything to suggest there is still something in the mines? Has any sort of exploration or mapping of the mine railway been done? Does anyone even know how much trackage was in the mine? And more importantly, how did they get the locomotives down there?
