Wayne, back when I started on the railroad (longer ago than I care to think about!) there were still quite a few engineers around that had started in the steam days. In particular I had many conversations with the late Charlie Strunk. In his later years Charlie had been the senior engineer for the High Iron Company and their many excursions in the New Jersey, and Pennsylvania region. I never heard Charlie use that term…but I know he spent plenty of time with his butt on the cab window sill. Charlie ran the last trips on the CNJ with center cab locomotive 774.

A piece of 2x4 works great, especially if the wheel bites into the wood.

On the Lehigh Valley RR we used a chain on either side of a wheel to secure equipment.
All around the service tracks at the round house you would find chains laying on the ground to be used as wheel chocks. They lasted a lot longer than 2 x4’s!

Jeff. are you referring to a hex nut on the bolt? Then yes they will have retaining nuts. If you are referring to the nut holding the wrench..then a big yes to that too!

Well a very quick look shows that decals were available in late
19th century:

Most likely not used on coaches at that time - labor was probably
cheaper than purchased product. Beside it still had to be installed.

I would bet that the decorative scroll work was done with stencils. And back in the day….the decals were all varnish transfer not water slide. I don’t believe there are any suppliers of varnish transfers left anymore.

While #53 was the star of today's deliveries to Sheepscot, the cylinder castings for #11 were also delivered.

Are we going to lose the deposit on the pallet? Looks like somebody broke one of the slats!

This is a major step up from our old Bridgeport we have in the shop now. There is discussion ongoing as to replacing the Bridgeport with this or keeping both. There are uses for both.

Today I reassembled the machine and started a full cleaning.

Those old round ram “M” head Bridgeports make really stout drill presses!

Spring Work Weekend Day 1 - April 29:


* Planer shed - Brendan was supervising construction of a shed to house a new (to us) planer.

I must have missed the announcement, what is the story on the new (to us) planer? Is it a wood working planer or a metal planer?
A metal planer is a wonderful machine…..similar to a shaper but instead of the tool moving, the work moves beneath a fixed tool post.
A planer for wood is very nice, but a metal planer would be really cool!

Maybe we need a place where these initials are spelled out.
Lots of folks that are not local might enjoy knowing what we are talking about.
We need to remember that we have a large audience on this forum and not everyone is familiar with the terminology.

Track crew:  cutting ties, prep begins for SWW  (Tues)
                   switching work cars from TBS

You got me…..I thought TBS was a Cable TV channel.
Sometimes we need to spell things out as not everybody reading these pages knows what local initials mean.
