The Monson Jct. building was actually a depot on the Greenville Branch of the Bangor & Aroostook Railroad and continued in use until the northerly portion of that branch was abandoned in 1962.  I believe that the second floor contained living space for the agent. The depot apparently is being sold by the estate of Carl Vainio.

The ends of the Monson wood shed covered the angle braces in a similar manner, although the siding material was corrugated metal.

Re. hikability of the Monson Railroad (Glenn Christensen post of 12/1/2016 under U.S. Two Footers):

Most of the Monson RR ROW south of the Monson depot is owned by CMP and is hikable. North of the depot, both quarry branches are physically hikable, but visitors should request permission from landowners. The Monson RR tour in September (part of the National Narrow Gauge Convention) covered the main line from the depot to Sheldon Slate Co. (former Portland-Monson Slate Co.), the Hebron Pond Quarry Branch from the depot to the Homer Hill Road and the Monson Pond Quarry/Kineo Quarry Branch from the depot to those quarries.

I believe the trail you're asking about is the abandoned roadbed of the Bangor & Aroostook Railroad's Katahdin Iron Works Branch.

Ken, I think the engine was misidentified as #3.  The domes and cab roof curvature look like Hinckley to me.

Philip is correct that the engine (#1 or 2) is facing north.  However, this may only be evidence that the wye shown on the bird's-eye drawing of Monson actually existed during the early years of the railroad.  The wye also is shown in a plan of the branches of the Monson Railroad that I have seen at the Maine Archives.  The third leg of the wye was to have run from the west side of Chapin Ave. (Hebron Pond Quarry Branch) almost to the eastern boundary of the station grounds (Monson Pond/Kineo Quarry Branch).
This is also the only photo that I have seen that shows lettering on a Monson box car.

I'm with James and Ed on the lack of brass bands on #3.  Also pleased that #4, as well as #3, now has no fake pilot.  The Monson lives!

Glenn, most of the ROW between the Monson depot and Monson Jct. is owned by CMP and is occasionally used by ATV's. I never see 4WD's on the ROW and don't know CMP's position on those, although CMP presumably uses them to some extent for its own maintenance work. You are probably better off exploring north of the depot on foot because of varying and uncertain ownership and limited accessibility.
