Work and Events / Re: WW&F No. 53 - Official Work Thread

I will reach my 1 year volunteer anniversary this weekend so perhaps I am still an outsider looking in. But here are my 2 cents worth any way! It seems to me that we/ the WW&F keep taking on new projects and I understand why, its to keep the interest of those who are showing up the most. However with that said as the railroad expands and the project list just keeps growing the one area that seems to be lacking is maintenance. More track more projects but the weekday track crew isn't growing and with the number of projects started those that are getting finished are few and far between, but through no fault of their own the track crew is falling further and further behind. I caution all that the trend could end up with the WW&F as a static museum. That ought to ruffle a few feathers!

As a 29 year Rev War reenactor the most often question is - is that a real fill in the blank.
the question is asked because they have just encountered something the do not understand and feel the need to say something - so that is the question asked. is that a real campfire? is that what you are having for dinner? is that a real gun, is that a real baby and on and on it goes.

Okay, I'm still one of the new guys here - 8 months and a part of the id week track crew.
I am responsible for talking Steve Lennox into the fence and canopy at the SS section house (Steve calls it a kiosk).
the object as far as I was concerned was to provide us with an exclusive yard that was just enhanced with the residing of the building. Along the fence line we now store the side boards for the flat cars. While the canopy only provides limited protection from the weather, it more importantly provides a designated place for spike kegs and track bolts - A month ago spikes could be found at the section house, in front of the garage and in the upper parking lot - bolts were in the section house and at the garage - now there is a place where they belong!
I think a couple of similar canopies would allow us to consolidate and sort the many piles of joint bars that can be found throughout the campus - we have several different sizes and types and finding a specific one can be challenging right now.
Railroads tend to have standard structures which is why I went with this specific design, it can be quite flexible in both height and depth and could also be utilized for a new firewood/kindling canopy once the new engine house is completed.
I am hoping that this presentation to the WW&F community might generate some 'positive' feed back a opposed to the jabs calling it a farm stand or wishing well.
What do you think?

Tool Car - Doesn't that mean a collection of tools likely to be needed when working along the right of way?
Not a place in which to store tools in general. If all of the tools end up there, they will never be available or accessible when and where needed.
It should be only for a SELECTION of those items that are routinely put on a train in order to do work along the right of way.
Otherwise this car will get filled up with (fill in the blank!)

So, if we have a corn husking shed at Alna center, shouldn't there be signage as to the fact? Just asking.

We are not going to be able to screen this area, it will likely create a traffic problem during operation. Last week while spiking down the turntable ring rail we had a southbound motorist stop in the middle of the road east of the table location get out and come around to the front of his car and yell over asking what we were building. That was for 4 vehicles and 6 guys, now imagine a steam engine on the table and a train sitting on the passing track. This will not be screen able but will likely create traffic issues in this area.

the screen, whatever it is will require quite a bit of footage, not only across the ROW but along rte 218 as well and it would require significant height - should have been considered a long time ago!
