Carl, you would have to look at the bill of materials as specified by Jackson & Sharp to see whether they used square or hex head bolts. Certainly the square head bolts would be easier to hammer forge. Many streetcars used square headed bolts in the truck frames until well past 1900: Brownell, Brill, any of the MCBs, etc.

Great progress on the roof as well as the start on the shingles above the door openings. Will there be shingles on the faces of the posts, or will they be left bare? I ask, only because I see some tarpaper overhanging the front face of the west corner post.

Ron, if you get a chance, search RyPN for the thread about the panels that Railways To Yesterday made for their Chicago interurban car. It also might be on their website. I know the Baltimore Streetcar Museum has had replacement ceiling panels made for at least one streetcar. Sometimes the 3-ply veneer is glued together within curved formwork so that the panels are pre-curved.

Keith, you are most likely correct. I used the wrong term for the material finish. I seem to recall that we have used shingles on other buildings. My apologies.

Hi Ben, just picking a nit... The freight cars never had anything other than handbrakes, except possibly the milk cars. I don't think the Eames vacuum brake system in use on the original railroad had a retainer function - you either pulled a certain vacuum or you released the brakes; Jason could probably tell us whether the vacuum ejector could maintain a set vacuum setting all the way down the Mountain. If you look at the builder's photos of the various passenger cars while at the Jackson & Sharp plant in Wilmington, Delaware, you can see the Miller hook couplers. As for a date for conversion to Janney couplers, possibly comparing photos in the Kohler-Chesney books, as well as the Peter Barney books, might give you an approximate timeline after the Safety Appliance Act was enacted.

Very nice job moving the car into Bay 4. Not a lot of headroom, which certainly reduces the amount of space that needs to be heated! The roof looks great!
