« on: August 09, 2018, 06:37:10 PM »
I was hoping someone from the museum could supply the following information regarding Plymouth #52.

Length from pilot to pilot
Original width before addition of footboards
Wheelbase (journal to journal)

Thanks!

Hi John Kovacs:

Saw your note about the different types of EBT hoppers.  Currently there are only three types extant on the property; a very small number of two bay hoppers (only one I can think of was converted to a ballast car and is unique, so not something the EBT folks would want to part with), a couple hundred three bay hoppers (the EBT has sold them in the past and probably would be fine to sell another one or two) and a four bay hopper (recently restored).

As far as using one on the WW&F, I'm not sure how that would work.  Even the smallest EBT hopper was big, even for three foot gauge.  Putting one on two foot trucks I think would result in a very precariously balanced car.

Best,

US Two Footers / Re: Point Pleasant NJ Beach Train

Something very much like the train in the photo was in a scrapyard in Berkeley Township, NJ until fairly recently when the scrapyard changed hands and much of the existing stock was carted off.

Ed,

Thanks for the nudge.  I have contributed.  Wish I could afford to give more.

Mineral wool is made from minerals.  See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mineral_wool.

Saw the note about repelling birds.  I was a groundskeeper for several years in a community with a huge starling problem.  We tried the bird repellent that comes in a caulking tube.  I think it was supposed to act by making the perch hard to grip or was irritating to birds' feet.  In practice it didn't work and the stuff melted and ran.  We also tried constructing hedgehogs of spiky metal wire to dissuade them from nesting.  We had several birds seek out those sites to build nests as the wires gripped the nesting material.

Sorry, I don't have any recommendations.  My only thought would be to make the upper sections of rafters angled by adding metal sheeting and yeah, I know that would be a huge labor and cost.

Good luck!

Is there sound with the whistle video? I can open it and have adjusted the sound icons, but nothing.  Great pics and great news that the reconstruction is moving along so well.

Hi Folks:

I've been following the restoration thread for #9 for some time and am very impressed with the work being done.  I've read some posts that suggest that #9 might be ready for service in 2015.  I do realize that these things are subject to change without notice, but wondered if you might have a more concrete idea of when this could be expected to happen.  I am doing some long range planning for a trip to finally see the museum, hence the questions.

Thanks very much for sharing your efforts!

Best,

Bruce

Hi Tom:

Sounds like reasonable assumptions for when the truck was changed and with what.  I've asked questions about roads that went out more recently and that were well known and been told that no one knows.  How can no one know when the EBT replaced the riveted tenders on 16 and 17 with all welded tenders?  But that is the case.  I am guessing the answer is going to be similar for the SR&RL.

Been trying to locate the historical society using Google Maps.  Could someone send me a street address or nearest cross street?

Thanks!

Hi John:

Yes, Alder Gulch #12 is down for boiler work.  I was surprised at how little run time they got out of her.  I had thought they had done a very thorough overhaul, but maybe not.  AG is looking for funds to rebuild her last I looked.
