I follow several railroad preservation sites around the globe, and I cannot stop wondering about the dependability of this great little locomotive. It really seems to be well constructed, well serviced and cared for. You can read these stories about locomotives: "year 1, fresh overhauled, the engine X hits the rails. Withdrawn after two weeks for steam leaks, loose tires etc. Year two; firebox in need of big overhaul. Later major issues with wheel bearings. Year three, cylinder casting failed, frame cracked etc..." No. 10 just keeps going. Congrats for an engine well kept!

The photo was taken in my yard, just south of Tampere, Finland. The Volkswagen's temporary track is laid over my old 600mm rails, which mostly carry carts loaded with fire wood. The short (2 metres) track panels are original Orenstein&Koppel items from the 1890-1910 era and have proved most useful. I stand to be corrected but isn't there a town called Koppel in Pennsylvania, that was founded by the same company and was intented as a manufacturing site for n.g. equipment?

I really hope you will find some rails that can be reused. Not far away from where I live there is an abandoned siding with 33kg/metre rails, a mile long, only used by commuting rabbits and the odd neighbourhood cat. Sad thing we are on the wrong side of the planet.

Other Narrow Gauge / Porter 0-6-0 starts steam season 2012 in Finland

The Porter 0-6-0 (2313/1901) streching her legs on temporarily laid track yesterday in southern Finland. The occasion was a permanent way conference. The participiants and passers-by were impressed likewise. Kids were offered cab rides. The engine served a 750mm line in central Finland up to the sixties, the line belonged to a pulp factory. It had been a common carrier till the State Railway's broad gauge line reched the mill in 1942.

Just found the old book (Heeresfeldbahnen, Alfred B. Gottwaldt, 1986), the book claims three Brigadelok 0-8-0 were shipped to USA after 1965, the locos being Maffei 4613/1915; Hartmann 4140/1918 and Jung 2845/1918. The last one, the book says, went to "Zoo Chicago". They were outside-frame machines, so maybe some heavy modifications were done by new owners. Their previous owner was a coal mine near Cologne, where they supposedly saw some very heavy use and might have been in a very bad condition.

I might be totally wrong, but weren't there a couple of German 0-8-0 Brigadelok in Chigago or somewhere? Chigago Zoo? Something I read 20 years ago.

The Frankfurt 600mm Museum also owns some very nice WW1 pieces, a Baldwin gas-mechanical and German and French steam engines. There has been some re-enacting at Frankfurt and at the Muskau Forest Railway, but, I have the impression, not everybody is happy with historic uniforms, the German history being what it was.

I really hope You get the re-enacting project going, it looks very promising!

Good question, I was meaning metric tons (=1000 kg). And, for the record, the engine was O&K 12782/1936.

The rental company had its name up there also, so they didn't charge anything. Everybody was guessing the weight all day, if memory serves me right, it was 7,6 tonnes.

Very nice! I love that spaciousness. Great little locomotive. One thing puzzles me "#10 rests in the sauna..." Round here, you don't meet locomotives in a sauna. Well, inside the preserved Toijala roundhouse near us, there is an old wooden sauna where the engineers washed themselves after work. Today, museum volunteers continue to do it, and afterwards you sit in front of the sauna in the shadow of museum's big 2-8-0.

I will try to do it! The line in Jokioinen started in1899 with two Porter-built 0-4-4 Forneys (15 ton) 1745 resp. 1746/1897. Sadly, the locos were scrapped in 1952/53, but the memory lives. Maybe someday a replica steams on the old track...

The car is a masterpiece of construction and restoration! I like the canopy too. A modern glass and steel structure would not have been so majestic. Great exhibition!
