Title: Rail Sources
Post by: Dale Reynolds on June 04, 2009, 03:47:15 PM
The current R&R has an article on the Laona and Northern which says they are going to replace the 60# rail with 90# rail, 2 miles worth. They have a grant for it, but no timing was stated. If anyone is in northeastern Wisconsin this season, it would be cool to check this out. For reference, 56# and 60# rail is between 3 7/8 and 4 1/8 inches high. Dale Reynolds, Pendleton SC

For the record, 60-pound rail is 4-1/4 by 4-1/4 inches, while 56-pound rail is 4-1/4 by 4-1/8 inches. The fishing distance (the space between the bottom of the head and the top of the base, where the joint bars go) is identical. So somewhat worn 60-pound rail matches perfectly with 56-pound rail and the two can be bolted directly to one another.

It's probably around 1,100 miles away, but if the BOD is interested, I will be flying in and out of Milwaukee again this summer, at least a couple of times.

There is currently listed on RailSwap.org #60 rail for sale by Nelson services in Minnesota.  Asking $650/ton.  Ad does not state quantity available but does have rail size and bolt pattern.  FYI.......

We checked, alas they scrapped the joint bars. Without them the shipping would be too high.

It's kind of funny, joint bars are worth alot more than rail by weight but most people don't realize that.
