I will not be there this weekend, unfortunately. I did just drop a 17 drawer cabinet in the south end of bay 2. It's destined to help us manage tools and equipment in the machine shop.

It was scrapped out by a small local ship builder, so it could use a cleaning. If someone gets bored and wants to vacuum out the small bits of detritus and/or wipe down the drawers, I'd be thrilled! Otherwise I'll tackle cleaning it, and getting it placed next weekend.

Work done on Saturday April 2:

* Standard gauge track panels.  Mike and I, assisted by Cody, Scott, Dwight, and Dave, constructed 3 panels of standard gauge track for when Loco 53 arrives in May.
* Engine house: Stewart, Brendan, and supervisor Fred worked on rafters for Bays 1 and 2.

And we learned today the Cross Road will be getting some work real soon so we made room to get the material to the recently cleared area. Plans are to take all we can and stockpile it to use as fill in the future to cut down on gravel costs.. This area needs to be stumped first before the material goes there..

The  news snippet below comes from the Lincoln County News, as part of a story about Alna voters approving a number of funding warrants:

Voters also approved Articles 47 and 48, which asked if the town wanted to borrow and appropriate $525,000 to rebuild, reclaim, repave segments of Cross Road and shim and overlay the remainder of the road.

IMHO - What that parking area needs is stone and asphalt millings.

All in due time John. The best parkinglot we have is being used for storage. If we can get to a point where we stop building and using the main lot to store mud and clay, we then can spend the money to cap it off with some good stuff. I would rather not spend the money only to dig it up again. I don't call that a good investment.

Couldn't agree more Mike.  Maybe after the car barn extension, electrical upgrade, and engine house are completed we will take a time out from further building and focus on lots, walkways, and landscaping.  There comes a point where we can't be a perpetual construction site.

I assume that there are those who are already looking at adjacent real estate for parking lot expansion and/or storage area & laydown.  It would take the pressure off for parking on special events and tour buses in the future.  I also hope that coordination is being done with the Cross Road rehabilitation to account for a future crossing southbound.  (or maybe do it as part of the rebuild - but not use it for the short term.)  Just a thought.....

We do have a team that is in the know about adjacent land and the possibilities. We own enough land currently, we just need to develop it. I have started a dedicated storage area that I hope to continue on as time permits, but have several other project that are more pressing..

With much supervision and amazement from Cody, we removed the bottom covers off the final drives. We had to remove one because a seal had failed and filled the final drive with material. I had decided to replace the covers because they were worn heavily on one side, to the point I was concerned they were almost through. I found 2 used ones as new are long gone..
The heads of the 12 point Ferry Cap bolts (12 per cover) that were used had worn or the head rusted. Using some heat and a selection of nut removers, we got the first one off just after lunch.

Old on the left. Note the worn spot I was concerned with.

Some of the dirt and debris removed from the right hand one

Left side was a little more of a fight. Luckily Cody was there so my verbage was very filtered..but I won..

2 bolt heads on each were worn so the had to be torched. Then the rest of the bolt came out with vice grips.

The photos that Pete posted initially, that are now showing the circle with the line, are hosted on Google.  And the way that works is that Google sets 'viewability' of the images based on permissions stored at Google.  In other words, depending on who you are (from Google's perspective), you get to see the photos (or not).

The idea is that there can be multiple levels of sharing, some photos may be for "family", while others might be "friends", etc.  When everything is perfectly set, then others can view them. But when things are not perfect, its quite frustrating. I've earlier had the same issues.

My solution to that is to not use Google to share photos, even though I use Google for other purposes, including email.  A photo host that I like, is free, and works well, is PostImages.org (https://postimages.org/).

In the previous photo of Alan moving a casting up to the big lathe, please note that this is the center bolster casting for No. 11's rear truck. The outside surfaces were machined a couple of weeks prior, and the round part (away from the camera) that fits into the truck center plate to form the rear truck pivot will be turned on the lathe.
The intermediate and  outer bolster castings have also been machined. They are now ready to be fit up to the sills that run from front to back and have the holes drilled and bolts fitted to tie them together. Our next No. 11 work session on April 26th thru the 27th will see that process starting.
(https://i.ibb.co/Jx72bvJ/11-rear-frame-bolster-castings-2.jpg) (https://ibb.co/1sqKprW)
In this picture you can see from left to right the 2 intermediate bolsters, the center bolster, and the 2 outer bolsters.
To prepare to start the assembly of the rear frame, the railcar was moved from bay 2 to the car barn, where it will await the parts needed to get it back into service.
That space will be used to stage and assemble the rear frame of No. 11.
Six house jacks have been purchased that will be used to support the pieces during assembly and allow them to be leveled accurately.

In addition, the picture of Nicole at the Hercules horizontal mill shows not only Nicole machining the coach truck journal pedestals, but also behind her is the new tool chest that Alan acquired for the museum. It has been moved into a space on the south wall. This will allow us to organize and store the numerous accessories for the milling machines.

Yes. We really need to have more volunteers on the train actively monitoring passengers for safety and to deter inappropriate behavior. Ideally, each car should have a "car host" beyond just the Conductor and Brakeman so to assist in these matters.

The Wilmar test went very well. It will suit us EXTREMELY well. A few minor things were noticed, such as an issue with a rail clamp for jacking, an observation with squeezing, etc. Trying to Jack with the machine works, but for a continuous lifting, the most efficient way will be to use track jacks like we do with Big Joe. (Which we already had figured but wanted to test the jacks on the tamper.) The only thing we did not try was the lining.

Even with the testing we did, we managed to tamp almost 90’ of track in 3 hours. Big Joe can tamp 90’ either inside or outside in about 4 hours. Depending on how easy the tamping is. The biggest differences will be that Wilmar tamps ties fully, and two squeezes and it’s on to the next one, where as Big Joe can sometimes require several squeezes and only does either Inside or outside at a time.

Hey guys- other than maybe a demo for the sake of members, there is no tamping planned for SWW.  We’ll have our hands full with spiking and ballasting (two ballast trains).  We have a concise surfacing/ tamping plan for the entire Mountain- with about 12-18 major lifts to perform.  This work is scheduled May-July using both tampers.  There’ll be more ballasting this summer as well.

I don’t mind a SWW demo of the Harsco tamper if there’s interest, Joe and/or Steve Lennox are willing to lead it, and it’s in service- however it will still be in Sheepscot yard at that time.

Thanks,
Jason

Work done on Saturday April 16 (again this is a partial report because I was agent at AC):

* Easter Eggspress - all egg tickets were taken, the pump car was popular as was Grandpa's Kitchen.
* Bulldozer - Mike put on the bottoms of the rear dozer "thing", was cleaning up the dirt on the back, and by the time I left had gotten on one of the sprocket wheels.  Sorry I don't know what the real names for these things are.
* Machine shop - Alan was in the shop making little chips (presumably for Coach 3).

You got me…..I thought TBS was a Cable TV channel.
Sometimes we need to spell things out as not everybody reading these pages knows what local initials mean.

Keith, we frequently use initials for designated locations ie: TOM-Top of Mountain, AC-Alna Center. In this case I have been using the TBS as Trout Brook Station, I guess I could use EOT-End of track but feel TBS is more appropriate as when completed, it will have a small station, run around and turntable.

Maybe we need a place where these initials are spelled out.
Lots of folks that are not local might enjoy knowing what we are talking about.
We need to remember that we have a large audience on this forum and not everyone is familiar with the terminology.
Thanks for the explanation!

These abbreviations are officially designated in the employee’s timetable.  Maybe we should post the location chart out of the TT on the forum.  That’s a little beyond me..

I know I'm late to clear up the report for Saturday-

But it's worth mentioning that Nicole was really the one making chips, as the pedestals for coach 9 we're getting prepped for assembly to the truck frames.

I spent most of the day working on some CAD for the tracer attachment project. That evening I made a couple of parts for the lathe and did some tests.

Today's Wednesday, isn't it?  With the holiday my days are off.

Anticipated work for Saturday April 23 - finally, a Sunny day has been forecasted!
* Dozer re-assembly and other vehicle work
* Machine shop coach 9/loco 11 work
* Engine house construction, if there's any lumber

With SWW in 2 weeks, and Edaville's 75th anniversary celebration occurring this weekend, there probably won't be a lot of people at Sheepscot.

Also this week the contractor started ditching Cross Road. Brendan has been trying to keep the piles pushed, managing to get stuck only once, and keeping an area clear for them to continue dumping. I expect only a few more days of hauling before they dump in other places.

Spring Work Weekend Day 1 - April 29:

* Planer shed - Brendan was supervising construction of a shed to house a new (to us) planer.

I must have missed the announcement, what is the story on the new (to us) planer? Is it a wood working planer or a metal planer?
A metal planer is a wonderful machine…..similar to a shaper but instead of the tool moving, the work moves beneath a fixed tool post.
A planer for wood is very nice, but a metal planer would be really cool!

Title: Re: April 2022 Work Reports

A few comments on the start of construction of No. 11, our new, Maine built locomotive. After two years of active design, planning, and buying parts, Ric Sisson, Jason Lamontagne, Wayne Laepple, and Gordon Cook gathered at Sheepscot to begin putting her together.

On Tuesday, April 26th, the components for the rear frame that supports the cab and tanks were brought from storage and placed in the space in Bay 2 that was cleared out previously. This space will be the erecting hall for the locomotive.

Ric started by arranging the parts in their final locations and test assembled them to determine that the parts and their dimensions were correct. Many components such as the front to back sills were fabricated by a water jet process that cut them to size and added most of the necessary holes. The bolster for the rear truck consists of 5 iron castings that had been machined. These fit across the frame between the front to back sills. There is another casting that anchors the bracing of the frame forward of the rear truck. Gordon machined this casting to size on Tuesday to fit in its place in the frame.
Careful measurements ensured that the parts were located accurately.

Once all was checked out, we started match drilling holes in the center bolster casting (the one with the round pivot for the truck). Match drilling means that the holes in the sills which were cut by the very accurate waterjet process were used to locate the holes in the castings and mating components. By Thursday the bolster and forward frame brace casting had been drilled and assembled to the two center sills. Drilling started on the intermediate bolster castings on either side of the center casting. In the first picture Ric and Wayne are setting the location of one of the intermediate bolsters.

As you can see in in the second picture, these holes were finished on Friday and this subassembly was bolted up and is now is resting in its final location. That along with the side sills have been placed on leveling jacks to continue assembly. The jacks will allow an accurate adjustment of the position of the frame so that it is square and level.

In the coming months assembly will continue. We schedule No. 11 work sessions at the beginning of the month, so anyone who would like to help is welcome.

Work done on Saturday April 30 - Spring Work Weekend day 2.

* Head Tide Trail - a crew worked to dismantle the rotted walkways, and assemble new walkway pieces (back at Sheepscot).
* Trout Brook track - both tracks were ballasted, up to where the spiking stopped.
* Planer building - the building was enclosed, except for the roof.
* Loco 11 - work on the frame.
* Boxcar 56 - Marcel at work.
* Machine shop - one of the things Alan was doing was working on one of the pivot pieces for the turntable.
* Food - of course Nancy and team put on a good feast.

Most everybody at SWW was at the north end - Sheepscot looked a little like a normal weekend (except for the cars).

Some photos from today, April 30th--Day 2 of Spring Work Weekend.

Work continued one No. 11's rear frame.  Here's a morning photo:

Most folks were busy spreading ballast at the future Trout Brook station.  Ed Lecuyer and Jason Lamontagne designed an efficient system to deliver stone.  Two trains were run, handled by No. 9 and No. 52.  Each train delivered an empty flat to the unoccupied track at Alna Center where the stone is stockpiled, then pick up the loaded car on the adjacent track.  As seen in Mike's photos above, Mike loaded the cars in the morning, and Bryce Weeks did the same in the afternoon.  After leaving Alna Center, the locomotive pushed the flat and a passenger car to the tail track at Top of Mountain, to wait for the other locomotive to pull its passenger car and empty flat back to Alna Center.  Some photos:

No. 9 and train on the tail track at ToM, waiting for No. 52's southbound train.

The track crew managed to unload 12 cars of rock on Saturday, and 6 car load of rock today.

Thank you to everyone who was able to attend, rather it was just for an hour, or a day, or all three days. Truly amazing what we can accomplish with a little extra help. Special thank you to the kitchen crew for their dedication to feeding us all three days.

One can’t emphasize enough how family like the atmosphere is, rather it’s your first work weekend, or several years in. It’s great to be a small part of such a big family.

Can't say it any better than Joe just did.  After the last big work weekend in the fall of 2019 before the pandemic struck, it was great to see many friends again after a 2-1/2 year hiatus.  And yes, Nancy Weeks and crew fed us well.

A couple of photos today of the ballast work that spread stone along sections of the Mountain.

Thanks everyone who stepped up and joined in to help during weekend, and especially on our Head Tide Trail rehab project. Unfortunately, circumstances prevented me from being directly involved with the lions share of the work, but our wonderful volunteers stepped up to the plate, and got lots done.
- 3 new pedestrian walkways  were built to replace decayed structures.
- 2 old structures were dismantled and removed.
- the right of way was cleared between route 218 and the Midcoast Conservancy access gate.
A huge thanks to everyone who cleared trail on Friday, to Jack, Jon, Ken and Dave  who continued trail work on Saturday and to Dave, Jason, Ben, and Ed who endured a stream of text messaging in my absence to make sure projects found their volunteers. A big thanks to Stan and the fellow who was working with him (whose name I am sorry to say escapes me at the moment) for constructing the new pedestrian walkways.

There is still some work to be competed, like setting walkways on their sills, building connector trails for them, but this project went from ‘when?!’ to obtainable thanks to all of your help. In addition to the great benefit the trail provides to the surrounding community when it is usable, it will provide an additional point of interest when the railway opens to  Trout Brook Station.

Many of you who have walked that section of right of way this weekend probably noticed the lovely white flowers that cover the roadbed just south of Head Tide cut on the fill. Their name had escaped me at the time, but they are called Bloodroot (sanguinaria canadensis). A quick read on the plant, which my dad always cultivated in his garden revealed that it can have a poison ivy like effect for some and it’s root has some powerful medical properties.

Best,
Steve
