Title: Wood car restoration
Post by: Eric Bolton on November 19, 2008, 07:17:34 PM
I am currently trying to put together a plan to submit to the board for the restoration of D&RGW boxcar #3178. Seeing how you guys are pros at wooden car restorations I figured I could ask a few questions here. What kind of wood should be used for end beams, siding, doors, and roofing?

Eric,
Check on the web site of the Friends of the Cumbres and Toltec. They have done many wood car restorations and can tell you readily what type of wood was used in the various applications.
The added benefit is that they are all ex- D&RGW cars.

Another group that does a lot of wood car restoration is the Society for the Preservation of Carter Railroad Resources. Visit http://www.spcrr.org (http://www.spcrr.org). You also may want to try the folks on the RYPN "Interchange" - http://www.rypn.org (http://www.rypn.org).
