Title: "old" photo of the week...
Post by: Stephen Hussar on October 26, 2009, 09:00:02 AM
...but it was only 5 years ago, so it's not really that old. Just think of all that has been accomplished in the past 5 years...it truly is amazing.

I remember that time well but I never would have thought it was already 6 years ago.

Wow, Old Smokey still didn't have number plates or couplers!

If memory serves it was July 12, 2004 or right around that date.  #10 was in the very last stages of it's 1.5 year overhaul.  That day was "Pleasure Island Day" at the railroad, celebrating #10's 100th year and its years at Pleasure Island.  A whole bunch of people showed up to celebrate but I think #10 only pulled one or two trains that day.

Is it possible this was the Friday before the event...an afternoon test run?

No, it was the Saturday of the event.  The engine's first fireup since 2002 was that day, which happened in the morning, it underwent a test run to AC, returned, they had to kill the fire to get in the smokebox to fix something, then fired it back up again.  It pulled at least the last train of the day and was in service for some portion of Sunday.

Well, I guess I've been around long enough to add some historical photos....

The date was July 10, 2004, first steam up of #10 after the rebuild.

Pressure builds, note the color of the cab interior:

The pop lifts for the first time:

First trip up the line:

And, a gasket let go on the joint from the dry pipe "T" to the steam pipes and that got replaced. It was a sooty and hot job but otherwise everything worked pretty well.:

Ahh, the good old days!
