It was verry hot there that day, 84 degrees with absolutely no shade.  However we did sucessfully lay and line 90 feet of rail.

Mike Fox played musical joint bars ahead of the spike team while Ed G. did carpentry on the 2nd floor of the station.

  Dave and Mike ;   Thanks for the great pictures of the track work done at Albion.   The next step will to finish the track to the station and borrow the tamper from W. W. & F.  and the rail will be ready for trains.   The effort of the group at Albion is just great and appreciated  by all .     Thanks   Fred L. Kuhns

Great job guys!  I can just dream of seeing #9 and train coming up the track to the station.  Now I know that in reality I will probably never see that happen, but wouldn't that be a dream come true.  :)

Thanks for the photos.   The first time we put track down we had Bruce W's velocipede and ran that up and down the track.  If the BOD approves, a hand car from Sheepscot could go up to give rides when the track gets put back in front of the station.

Does the museum or W&Q own any of the ROW in or around Albion?

we own the next 1/4 to 1/2 mile of mainline ROW adjaicent to the southern end of the AHS land.  That runs up to the next grade crossing uninterupted for an FRA red tape free ride.

Why couldn't no. 10 go to Albion sometime for a few days, such as the way the Monson engine visited Sheepscot and Monson and Phillips a few years ago? Make no small plans!

All;
   Carl called me yesterday. As his computer is on it's last legs and seems to be receiving "colorful" stuff from the web so he finds himself unable to get his emails to go where they're supposed to. Anyway, this has delayed his thank you emails to those who participated in the in the Albion Spring Work Extra.  He sends his most heartfelt thanks to you all. He also wants all to know that he has obtained and laid out the rest of the ties. He has also set out the rails in the order they were taken up. Matching joint bars should be ready for when we are there again. He's having his own track gauge built as well. Carl had one question I was unable to answer. What is the distance between the siding and mainline that will result in a two foot distance between a car on the siding and one on the mainline? I informed him that the ground had not been further disturbed since he removed the track so it should be easy to go back to what was there. Nonetheless, he still wants to know. Anyone with an answer?
Dave

Dave,
With a six foot wide car, there is two feet of overhang on each side. Therefore six feet is the minimum rail to rail clearance to give a two foot spacing. I would not cut it that close and go seven feet rail to rail.

Looking at past accomplishments and location of the track, the main line is too far east on the curve. Moving parts of it west will help line things up better. Maybe this fall we can utilize the tractor again to help with moving the windrow of ballast.

Mike and Ira;
    Thanks for your comments. I'll just tell Carl to lay out the ties next to the eastern edge of the disturbed area and we'll move the track and/or excavate on the western side of the mainline come November so that we have seven feet between the western siding rail and the eastern mainline rail. With everything laid out with joint bars that fit it should hopefully go fairly smoothly.

joint bars that fit it
Now heres to hoping for a correct statement. I think we were about out of one pattern of Joint bars. I had to hunt them all up the last time.

All;
   I had another nice chat with Carl tonight and I have good news of progress at Albion. Carl reported that the rest of the main line was set out and spiked today. The wheel sets to the Plymouth were placed on the rails and Carl anticipates that the locomotive will be placed on the wheels soon. Jody West (who was so helpful at the Albion Day Extra and helped out today) is anxious to have the engine under a temporary over so he can get it running. Rails were also placed near the siding. The scrap ties have been picked up and set out for pickup by a local man who has a use for them as a target backstop. Brush clearing has started or will start in the near future especially around the area near the turntable where some long ties are currently piled so they can be accessed for the siding. With all the progress that has been made this year I'm hoping many of you will consider joining us for the November Albion Day.
Dave

Wow. They have accomplished a lot it sounds like. Perhaps there is some renewed interest in the Historical Society now. That's great. Hopefully some of the younger generation shows more interest to help Carl and Phil with all they do.
