Title: March 2023 work reports
Post by: James Patten on March 01, 2023, 06:41:54 AM
Anticipated work for Saturday, March 4:

* With a snowstorm forecasted, it's hard to know how many will be there.  But if Mike is there, I would expect more clearing work north of the west parking lot (where he was working last weekend).

If the predicted weather holds true, I will not be there.

Forecast is calling for 8-12" of snow in the area, with the snow lasting all day along with high winds making blizzard-like conditions at times.  I'd encourage people to hunker down on Saturday.

It seems to me the snow has come later in Maine and  Alna than the previous years but now it looks like to catching up  on the time. Have a nice Sunday Mike.

We are considering a plowing effort on Monday afternoon in order to make way for the shed move.  This storm left 9-12” of heavy snow, which will have been through a freeze/thaw/freeze cycle by Monday.  The only hope is to hit it when well above freezing.  M

Right now two of us are available; for this kind of effort we’d really like more hands.  If any readers might be available, please do say so here.  This will help us decide.

Thanks
Jason

Training session this morning. This is in a secluded area of the lot, with only one point of entry which, was guarded. Low speed familiarization for Cody. This was the safest way to instruct him and train him on the use of the tractor (with a clutch) versus his tractors at home which are hydrostatic. He did very well once he got used to the clutch. I got word that he feels it in his left leg tonight..

Work done on Saturday March 11:

* Cody training on the John Deere tractor
* Bryce, Dan and friends were working on #10.
* Marcel was working on Boxcar 56
* Zack (and maybe Stewart) were shingling on the engine house.
* Brendan cut a hole in the floor of the main room of the house and installed a floor electrical plug, so that now we have easy-to-access power at the table.
* Dave was working on an addendum to our lease with the W&Q.
* I helped Linda a bit in the archives.
* Nancy, of course, made lunch
* Mike installed one sprocket on the dozer.
* Board meeting at 4

Both sprockets are now on the dozer and I did a little painting. Also worked on the Deere to try and fix a fuel leak but need a replacement brass washer. The loader also got some attention as Brendan said the brakes went out. I found no fluid in the resivoir so I need to go through the whole bleeding process again..

Winter Storm March 14, 2023.

At present we are not planning any railroad plowing or clearing operations related to this storm.  Some SS clearing work may be needed if it doesn’t melt off first- which we’ll handle as it comes up.

Thanks to all who helped keep us open this winter.

Just wondering how this week's snowstorm affected the railroad and the Easter Eggspress trains?

Now the newsletters don't even show up on the forem. Can someone tell us what's wrong?

The Newsletters access needed to be moved off of the forum because our website host (which actually has the Newsletters) is changed.

Newsletters are now accessed at www.wwfry.org/newsletters

This also allows any member (not just forum participants) to access the Newsletters, so long as they know the password.

And that password is....

In the Member's Only section of the Forum, and can be distributed upon request.

If Alna was anything like my house, very little.  There'll probably be a few trees or branches down along the line, but we got maybe 5 inches at my house of heavy wet snow.  I think it will all be off the tracks by this weekend.  If we don't get anymore snow this month, then we'll be well into mud season by the time the Eggspress trains roll down the line.  Or maybe past mud season, since it should be all melted by then.

Yes, thanks Ed!  John McNamara and others put in a tremendous effort to get these all scanned and posted, documenting our history.  Glad to see the past issues are available again.  Though I do recall a post somewhere a few years ago by Fearless Leader stating I looked like I was 15 years old and weighing 90 pounds in the cover photo on the November/December 2003 issue.

More of Dans element, or more like what he wasn't wearing..

Freds tractor had a leaking injector line that I found last weekend. I replaced these brass washers with new and solved the issue.

I also worked on the brakes some on the loader. They need to be bled out all over again because the reservoir was empty last weekend. I did not have a helper so that did not get done.

I also put new linkage in the Kubota and got that ready to use for April 1st.. Over all a busy day.

At the moment it looks like I can be in Sheepscot Saturday.  Anyone else interested in a cutting crew (including an engineer for 52 or 51 to get to ML&M and points north)?
