Alluded to elsewhere, a project is now underway to provide a firmer foundation for the Sheepscot Station buildings and rearrange platforms for better guest flow during popular events. A few Tuesday photos.
A temporary giftshop for winter events is being set up in Sandy River & Rangeley Lakes combine No. 14. A view from the partially disassembled station platform looking into No. 14.

The largely disassembled platform. A temporary platform ramp has been set up on the turntable lead track in the lower yard for our winter event passengers.

Will the platform be extended North so the train does not have to be shuttled to free the engine
for the run around?
Inquiring minds and all that.
Darn auto correct
Happy Thanksgiving
-
Yes, the platform will be extended about 100' north. Everything is being placed on new pilings, and the platform lowered so to match the step on the coaches (and not the coach platform). The handicap access ramp (and main boarding flow) will be on the east side of the Sheepscot station building, so that check-in can be done via Sheepscot station's ticket window (across from the gift shop door.)
Finally, parts of the mainline will be planked over, to allow the siding to be used for passenger operations - which will be very handy on days when two train sets are in operation or other special circumstances.
-
On the pic of the gift shop above something has puzzled me a lot. Above the door at the back of the room there is a triangular roadsign with a dark blue Mogul on it. Obviously this isn't an American roadsign but a French one. I wonder how you've got it.

Good catch Alain. Now my curiosity is up also.

Great idea to put the platform at step level. That's a tricky gap to navigate from platform to platform, esp for small kids and older folks (like me!).

With the lower platform, how will guests in wheelchairs enter the cars? Will the portable metal ramp still work?

There will be a wheelchair ramp at baggage-door level installed at the north end of the new platform.

In France that roadsign warns a driver that he is nearing a grade level without any barrier and that he will only meet a crossbuck and mostly a Stop signal by the track. Here is a pic of that signal in the late 60's and a train of AMTP with two ex TPT boxcars. I wish anybody could satisfy my curiosity and Bill's one in the process about that French roadsign hanging in the gift shop.

I'm sure someone at the museum knows how it was obtained.

I was going to write, "That's just a generic Vienna Convention sign" but I went and checked, and it turns out every country has their own variation on the image. Some ten-wheelers, some 0-6-0's, some 0-8-0's, etc. And the one in the gift shop is definitely the French one. The locomotive silhouette is black, instead of dark blue.
Alas, I don't know where it came from. ;D

How will the lower platform affect access to the gift shop (single door and multi-door)?

The gift shop / freight shed will be lowered to match the new platform height. Sheepscot Station will be getting a step, as it's pilings are independent of the platform and are in good shape.
-
What will be the process of lowering the freight shed?

Brendan, thanks for the photos of the pile driver at work on the new passenger platform, interesting to know the process of installing the pile.
-
Really impressive work! Having the platform further north will be nice for simplifying the run-around move. Does shorten the overall trip, however ::)

We're planning a northward extension of the platform at Trout Brook to compensate for this.
-
Was totally unaware of the apring/ice house under the platform. Is it still functional?
-
Bob, if you're talking about the small building at the north end of the pilings, that's the house for the pump to the water tower. It still is functional.

Wow!
-
Double wow!! But why was the shelter on the turntable?
-
Never a dull moment at the WW&F!!
Does this mean it's going to TOM by rail and not by truck?
-
The building was on the turntable because it won't fit past the water tower without removing the water spout so we were hoping to take it on the service track instead. However, it wouldn't clear the round house either. The water spout will have to be removed and at the same time we can fix the brackets and straighten it out. It was an exciting day to say the least!

I attempted to take a time-lapse video of the lift. I thought it would be a neat perspective.

The old Sheepscot shelter was shipped to Top of the Mountain this afternoon.
Using the big forklift to lower the shelter down further on the flatcar. The shelter was left 8 inches higher on the car the day we craned the shelter onto the car to pull the lifting beams out from underneath.

-
We're building a bigger locomotive so we can pull longer trains so we need a longer platform......
-
Has there been thought given to having restroom facilities on the new platform? Nothing fancy but it might be nice to have a restroom close to the train.
-
It would be difficult to imagine restroom facilities at ToM which would be reasonable to maintain and acceptable to the majority of our patrons. Lacking all utilities restricts it to composting/outhouse style facilities, or a bright green porta-john. The only road access is through SeaLyon Farm, and that road isn't improved to the point that I'd take an on-road truck on it for much of the year. The owners of SeaLyon might also understandably balk at regular porta-john truck traffic through their property.
Events at the farm always have porta-johns on-site for the duration of the event. So there are typically facilities at both "ends" of the line.
-
I *think* Mark was referring to constructing something on the new Sheepscot platform.
Yes, that was considered, but quickly ruled out due to the plumbing required. There has been talk about adding a porta-potty to the Sheepscot area for busy days, as patrons typically do not see the Restrooms near the parking lot, then discover there are no facilities near the boarding platform. The giftshop and station crew would also appreciate facilities a bit closer to the action.
-
Something like the facility on the old Wiscasset station - got flushed twice a day ;D
Well it could hang out the back - but the tide doesn't get high enough at SS.
And we hope it never does.
Thanks for the pix.

Yes I was talking about the new platform. You could a compost toilet and and have hand sanitizer
-
Yes I was talking about the new platform. You could a [have a] compost toilet and and have hand sanitizer
If this was incorporated into the new platform, there could be a prominent sign (with map) on the toilet door alerting patrons to the nearby full-service restroom facility (that has heat in the winter). 8)
-
Yes I was talking about the new platform. You could a compost toilet and and have hand sanitizer
Just to completely beat this obviously dead horse: As one who has extensive experience with composting toilets, I do not support this, for a variety of reasons.
- They smell
- They attract insects
- They do not cope well with "surge" usage, which is pretty much the only scenario it would see.
- Someone has to empty it
-
At one of the places I go to walk or ride my bike, they have disguised standard porta-johns by building rough-sawn lumber structures around them, with a door at the back so the pumper truck can service them. There is also a "modesty panel" in front since they are unisex.
-
There is also a "modesty panel" in front since they are unisex.
Wayne, what is the "modesty panel" and where is it located? I thought they had full doors on the front.
Since a disguised porta-john would be located near the Sheepscot station it could be fitted with an operating exhaust fan that would help keep the smell under control. Just a thought.....
-
Bill --
In this case, it was a section of wooden fencing erected in front of the little shed containing the porta-john so a passerby could not see directly into the thing while passing in front of it. The piece of fence was far enough away from the building so the door could open to its full width, and long enough to screen the entire front of the building. In the old days, when rural stations had outside toilets, such fences were often L-shaped so that one had to walk in from the side and around to the front to access the facility.

It appears that the new platform will wrap around the new platform. Why is it better to go around the back side?

It appears that the new platform will wrap around the new platform. Why is it better to go around the back side?
1. In order to avoid moving the freight shed (even temporarily) the new pilings needed to be driven behind the building, then beams will be inserted under the building to support the structure between the pilings on the front/platform side across to the rear side.
2. Rather than waste this newly created space, improved pedestrian flow can occur around the entire building. This will be especially helpful during special events when two trains of up to 100 passengers each could be boarding and unloading nearly simultaneously.
3. Note also that the handicap ramp will be located behind the Sheepscot station building. The preferred pedestrian flow will now bring visitors around the back side of the station (rather than right next to the End of Track) and place them in the space between the Sheepscot station and Gift Shop/Freight Shed entrance. This allows the Sheepscot ticket window to be used for its intended purpose - to greet passengers upon arrival. This will be much safer than the current arrangement. Currently, the station agent basically needs to occupy the space in front of the station - where there is a lot of pedestrian traffic during departure/arrival times. Routing the general flow of traffic around the building eliminates this bottleneck and creates a much more pleasant, and safer visitor experience.
4. Finally, this allows the front of the Sheepscot station to be restored to its common carrier era appearance - no ramp, just a simple step up to the platform.
-
Ed,
thank you for a most excellent explanation!
I am glad to hear that the museum has several events where the crowds are so large!
I thought that only the free Victorian Christmas was a large crowd pleaser.

A diagram of planned Sheepscot platform improvements published in the January/February WW&F Newsletter:
And the caption: "Planned improvements at Sheepscot Station. Over the years, the foundations under our Sheepscot track platform, freight house and passenger shelter have shifted significantly, rendering the north end of the track platform and the shelter no longer safe for use. To remedy this, Chesterfield Associates will be shifting the freight house and passenger shelter out of the way, before driving new piles to support the platform, freight house and a new passenger shelter. The existing 100-foot track platform and freight house will be lowered about 12 inches, and a new 80-foot elevated track platform extension will be built to the north, as well as a new passenger shelter and walkway/ramp running on the east side behind the shelter, freight house and station. The existing passenger shelter will eventually be moved to Top of Mountain for reuse there. Once completed, we expect to use the north window of the station (marked by a star above) for passenger check-in, opposite the door to the gift shop."
With the existing 100' platform dropped 12 inches, I understand our wheelchair guests will be accommodated by the 80' elevated platform extension.

Rocks being placed along the mainline embankment underneath the location of the new platform. The big rocks will hold rip rap on the slope to prevent the ballast from sliding down the slope.

Patience. Still waiting on materials, I believe.
-
The materials (beams) arrived last week.
In the interim, safe access to the freight shed has been completed so to allow visitors passage to the full gift shop, rather than a cramped and uninviting version in Combine 14. Train boarding is done on the turntable lead near the 3way switch with the temporary handicap ramp nearby, if needed.

Folks,
I am glad to see some work re-starting on this project. It is a much needed improvement! Those are some big rocks.

Work this week on the northern 80 feet of the platform. Support timbers were installed on the piles to build the platform on. The slope around the piles was backfilled with rip rap and ballast was dumped along the outside of the track.

That's quite a long platform! Wonderful!!
Great work as always. Let's hope the temperatures get more spring-like soon.
-
Will the northern end of the platform be elevated so our wheelchair and other limited mobility passengers can enter the train through the large doors on coach No. 8 and caboose No. 320? I understand this was the plan many months ago.

Excellent progress. Thanks, Brendan.

Bill,
Yes. In fact, Brendan pointed that out to me today.

Excellent! This will be a big improvement over the old platform arrangement.

I was just kidding. An open-wire line would probably be a bad idea due to fallen branches, etc. Besides, Scott and Joseph are doing just fine with cable.

When were done there will be platform all the way down the backside of the station and shelter area. The new wheelchair ramp will be located behind the Sheepscot station building.

Gee Brendan, were you really drilling pins or drilling for oil? That was a mighty big drill bit you have there. ;D

I do get that the deck boards need to be transverse for
wheel chair safety (wheels getting stuck) and the height to meet code
But it really needs a top cap to finish it off :) IM(not so ;D ;D)HO

The area where the old passenger shelter was. The new shelter will be the same width as the freight station/gift shop.

Will the new shelter be directly connected to the station/gift shop. Would be very convenient during the fall/winter months.
-
Will the new shelter be directly connected to the station/gift shop. Would be very convenient during the fall/winter months.
I think this idea has potential. The current arrangement is somewhat of a choke point with two-way traffic through a narrow area. It would take some doing to rearrange the gift shop inside to facilitate another door.
-
More than one entrance and exit to the gift shop could open up other potential problems. It may seem like a choke point, but it works well.
-
Potential problems, like what? Let's talk about it. There might be easy solutions.
I would say it doesn't work well. On busy days it's pretty difficult to get in and out.
-
One problem I can think of is possible shrinkage as it's called in the industry. As it is right now all giftshop customers have to pass by the counter on their way out, making it easier for the gift shop crew to see any activity going on. If an alternate exit was put in then people could pick something up and wander out without second thought, and the gift shop volunteers might not catch it as easily, since a customer can completely avoid the counter. One remedy to this would be to have an entrance *only* on the north side of the building and essentially make the gift shop traffic one way, so everyone exits by moving past the counter.
-
Until the old platform was removed there were two points on entry / exit from the gift shop. Visitors came in through the end door and then exited through the center double doors. This has worked well for about 30 years. The only time there was a bit of a bottleneck was when the front doors were closed due to bad weather. On a few occasions one front door was left open to allow for a larger number of visitors.
The lack of a platform has caused a bottleneck but it's only a temporary problem.
-
Today we cut the front piles to height and cut notches in the piles for the new supports beams to sit on.
(https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/s5/bbarry74/KTGD3419.JPG) (https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/s5/bbarry74/KTGD3419.JPG)
We jacked the end of the freighthouse off the old utility pole supports and put the first new beam in place. The freighthouse will be lowered down onto the new beams when we're finished.

Dante brings up a valid point and it has happened in the past with the West doors and South door open when it's really busy. There were at least a couple of times that merchandise "walked" because we were really busy in the gift shop and were unable to catch the person before they left the store.
-
More than one entrance and exit to the gift shop could open up other potential problems. It may seem like a choke point, but it works well.
Mike has a valid point. One big potential problem that I see/have with adding a door on the North end is that it would be taking away valuable space that I can't afford to lose. I don't have enough room as it is for displaying sample merchandise or storing inventory. Adding a door would take away both from the gift shop plus make it easier for someone to potentially sneak something out without our knowledge.

Saturday afternoon three more beams were put in place.

-
Wow! A lot more got done after I left Sheepscot 1 p.m. yesterday. Nice!
-
It's our new dance floor. A little bouncy, however.
-
How can it be bouncy the way it was built??
-
Maybe it won't be bouncy after getting all of the flooring put in, but Saturday as I was moving over some of the floored areas it seemed like it would flex some, especially between the large beams.
-
Newly-built decks and floors with no live loads on them can have some resonance, which can be mistaken for deflection.
-
Really old time dance floors had spring built into them.
Up & down is not too bad -- side to side will give you "mal de mer" ;D
-
Even a steel and cement bridge will bounce. Ever sit on one as a heavy truck goes by? Bouncing is fine.
-
The first set of new beams was put underneath the freight shed today.
All the beams were carried down and staged at the end of the timber road.

(https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/s5/bbarry74/IMG_8897.JPG) (https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/s5/bbarry74/IMG_8897.JPG)
A roller support was made up to bolt to the pile and a piece of roller conveyor was placed on cribbing under the bulding. Using the excavator we fished the beam through the first roller support and onto the roller conveyor. When the beam reaches halfway under the building we unhook the excavator and push the beam by hand the rest of the way under the building on the rollers. When the beam is sticking out the track side of the building we take the excavator back around and hoist the beam up on the other pile.

From the Facebook page, apparently 11. Five in the back, one on each rear jack, Five trackside, one on each front jack, and Bob Longo to yell commands at them. Each yell equals one complete turn down of the jack screw.

The new lower deck will be appreciated by all of us older folks with unsteady legs! I hope the book/gift store is back to work soon!
Will the new dance floor get a shed over it? Thanks for all you do! Ted Miles WW&F Member Build 11 Contributor

Each bay held four jacks - two on the east and two on the west sides. One person in each side in each bay controlled two jacks. It was pretty easy work once we all figured out which direction to turn our jacks.

We finished framing the platform in front on the freight house and nailed down half the decking today.

We decided the old platform supports in front of Sheepscot Station were to far gone so we replaced the supports in the afternoon.
The new supports are left over pile cutoffs.

Thanks so much for that update. Works are always coming along consistently and fast on the railroad this is what has always astonished since I joined you. Amercans have an other culture regardings efficiency and organization when it comes to building something. My father a POW just made free by the Gi's told me how he was amazed to watch them building quickly a wooden bridge over a river.

The platform is complete in front of the station buildings. We measured the platform length at 191 feet.

Is there a plan to install a ramp for wheelchair accessibility? Just wondering if we're going to keep the metal ramp by the engine house for that

The raised portion of the new platform on the north end will handle the on\off of the cars. There will be a new ramp built behind the stationhouse rather than the one that was in front of it previously to allow access to the platform itself.
-
Expanding on Daniel's question and Bill's answer...
The current plan is to start using the new platform as soon as it is ready trackside. That could be as soon as 6/8, if everything aligns.
The temporary metal handicap ramp will stay in-place until the rest of the accessibility improvements are completed on the new platform (including the ramp that Bill described.)
If we have a guest who requires the temporary metal ramp, we will double the train over to it before departure.
Once the platform at Sheepscot is fully accessible, the temporary metal ramp will be removed. It may get reassembled somewhere else, but that has yet to be finalized.
-
How will operations look when the handicap access at the station itself is completed and in effect? Will coach/combine 8 be spotted so the baggage doors are at the handicap access point every time? Would it make the most sense to have 8 at the north end of every train when that time comes?
-
Am I correct in assuming that the small hand-carry ramp that I donated many years ago will continue to be used to span the short space between the new platform and the coach?
-
Dante - Yes, the train will be set up so that the baggage doors on coach 8 can be aligned with the ramp AND still maintain enough space on the south end of the platform as to not foul the switch. In other words, no more shove back to "the corner" nonsense.
John - Yes, we still use it on the temporary handicap ramp, and will continue to need it on the new platform at Sheepscot.

Make sure to powerwash that deck and get a good coating of water seal on it. No need to let mother nature prematurely rot all that wood.
-
John,
It's all built of PT so that's not an issue. Brendan, Joe, and all of the others who worked tirelessly on this- thank you. It looks and works wonderfully. Can't wait to take our first mixed train of the season out from Sheepscot Sta. tomorrow.
Thanks again!
Steve
-
Well Steve, that's what I used to think so I did what you said, nothing. Now 18 years later I am in the process of having to replace my whole deck surface at considerable expense due to rot. And yes it was PT southern yellow pine.
-
The PT would need to weather for up to 6 months before you could treat it, to allow it to dry out.

I agree with Mike's statement. If Harry Percival could, he'd say..." put the linseed oil to it!".
For many years when I had a 12' x 24' deck to maintain in Massachusetts, I would brush a coat of boiled linseed oil onto all the pressure treated decking and framing. That deck was built in 1988 and still going strong to this day. My own deck and other surfaces are treated similarly here in Maine.
Harry would point out that the preservatives used in modern treating are not as effective as used to be used when he worked at C.M.P. and studied various chemical treatments for utility and transmission poles. It was a favorite subject of his when we'd have a bowl of ice cream late at night.
When you power wash or pressure wash treated (or any) wood, the water force is opening the grain of the wood. That also leads to shortening the life of the lumber. Washing new lumber is not necessary. Let it age a but, dry out and hit it with linseed oil before this coming winter.
-
I did not know about a linseed oil treatment. But if the results in MA are that good, then I would say it is well worth our time and money to do just that this fall. As least Harry would be looking down with a smile.
Might be a good time to treat some smoke boxes as well, mixed with a bit of carbon black.

Hello John,
Yes, Harry would be pleased and he absolutely loved the smell of fresh linseed oil.
Yesterday, I spent five hours scraping paint off the exterior of an old fire station. The wall has been painted with latex paint and you could plainly see what can only be described as total paint failure. The scraped clapboards
had not even a trace of color from the paint, meaning that the wood rejected the application completely. Unfortunately, as often happens with the use of latex paint, the wood is all rotted underneath. Now it will need to be replaced.
A couple of times a month, I talk on the phone with another W.W.& F. Ry. Museum life member. This fellow was a professional painter for much of his working career. We often talk about our own painting projects and agree with each other that we would both prime exterior wood with boiled linseed oil and letting it dry before using a high quality exterior paint. This as a result of not being able to find oil-based primers and top coat. Note that 30 years ago, we used Touraine oil-based paint on the then buildings at Sheepscot. This made Harry very happy and as Touraine became hard to find, our shopping trips grew to surrounding communities.
As particular as Harry was about paint and oil, another member (whose name rhymes with Vern) did not share the same passion for linseed oil. Though I asked multiple times "why" or "what would you use", I never got an answer that could be put to the group of Saturday volunteers.
Another old-timer and member of the Society for Preservation of Old Mills, advocated for not oiling or painting at all. So we had the full spectrum of opinions.
I used to love talking with Jeff Averill at Ames Hardware in Wiscasset and buying much of own painting supplies from him. Each year, I would get 4 gallons of "Woodsman" brand exterior oil (clear) stain for the cedar shingles on my house. Those shingles would suck that oil right up, breathe a little and be ready for another year of wind, sun, rain and snow.
To the crew that built the new platform, "Well Done"!
-
I will agree with Mike but it should be close to 6 months.
Also since the hidden 3 sides (or 4) were not coated before laying down,
do not use paint or solid stain - the moisture will come from underneath
and just push it off. Transparent will breath.
Any coating should be a week after any water (Rain, snow, washing, sleet, hail,
sweat or tears) so it dries for good penetration.

Wow! :)
-
There's enough room on that platform for small tables & chairs, one could sell snacks and drinks off a cart and still have plenty of room.
-
Fantastic work! It looks great.

For the seats on the platform would cast iron bench legs work? There's a place called "Old House Parts" in Kennebunk that has a number of them for sale, $45 per leg. I haven't gone to see them in person yet but I can do if there's interest. I've attached an image from their website to show what they are.
-
I really like those cast iron bench legs. I'm in favor of more visitor seating in general around Sheepscot (the need for which was brought to my attention by my wife Kara), and I think antique benches would be an attractive way of accomplishing that.
-
If we had a pattern, we could get new ones cast for a bunch less than $45 bucks. Just a thought ............
-
perhaps we should get a quote for castings and offer that price to the Old House Parts folks.
-
It's not worth the time and effort of making a pattern just to play price comparison. Either make new ones or buy used and take your chances.
-
I suppose if we like them, we could buy 1 at $45 and use it as a pattern to make many more for less.
-
I suppose if we like them, we could buy 1 at $45 and use it as a pattern to make many more for less.
Heck, let's be big spenders and buy two. Then we'll have a bench to sit in while we contemplate our wisdom.
-
Since the resulting castings will be slightly smaller than the original used as the pattern, shouldn't we buy 2 so we at least have a matching pair of originals that can still be used to make a bench?
-
I don’t think a “work bench” would work as a place to sit. The “table” height is usually at waist height, which means if you sit on what had been the work surface…..nobody (except possibly Paul Bunyan) would have their feet hit the ground.
And if you look at the castings…the feet are at different heights, so you would have to prop the rear legs on some sort of blocking. And the “seat back” is absolutely vertical, which would be quite uncomfortable. Most seat backs are slightly reclined. Work benches are meant to be just that…..and not a place to sit.
Keith
-
The bench legs are of different lengths, and would result in a slight leaning backward of the bench seat, hence not a vertical back. I would worry more about about backward instability.
-
Bob, the offset appears to be about five inches…that would be one heck of a reclining position!
And that still doesn't’ address the height of the front legs.
