Anticipated work for Saturday December 6:
* North car barn: raise the roof trusses. We need all available help. This is weather permitting, of course. Right now the weather forecast for Saturday is 50% chance of showers. Keep watching this space for a cancellation.
-
Due to the expected snow/ice/rain conditions predicted for Saturday, the truss raising party has been rescheduled for Dec. 13th, once again, weather permitting.
-
Thank you Steve. I will drop anchor and ride the storm out here.
-
Does anyone know when we'll get the Christmas trees we need in Two weeks and getting Santa's throne fixed up? Looks like a lot of storms and work in the next Two weeks.
-
I'm hoping that the truss-raising party next weekend (13-14) will take place and that there will be sufficient people on hand that some can work on these tasks.

Work done on Saturday December 6:
Not much. Because of the winterish weather, few people showed up. Nobody wanted to work out in the cold rain. So we replaced some shelves in the office, put up a blackboard in the basement, sat around and chatted, ate lunch, cleaned up and went home.
-
Actually ... two members stayed late. Brendan worked on #9's tank braces and Cindy did mail order work as well as opening the gift shop to sell some items to Josh B.

Anticipated work for weekend of Saturday December 13:
Friday:
* Board meeting at 4:30, in the house.
* Folks may be around working on storm clean up.
Saturday:
* Victorian Christmas prep (included a #10 fire-up)
* Storm clean up
Zack has decided to postpone the truss raising on the car shed until Spring - maybe work weekend, maybe later.
-
Now that the car barn has been shelved for the winter, what are our plans foe Sats. I know we will have to cut a cord or Two of hard wood for the steam engines, maybe clearing or thinning out trees at the top of the mountain, a little work can be done in the cellar. Of course some of this will depend on how much snow we get, if any. I would like to see an open winter with good frozen ground but that's rare. If we don't stay busy at the museum people will lose interest.
-
If we should have a number of good size logs from thinning, we should hold them for Spring and run a "log" train. Logs can be loaded with a little leverage, a couple of peavies and some strong backs. Great photo opportunity. Horse logging would be even better. For ideas surf YouTube for early logging videos for how-toos.

Work for Saturdays this winter is a great discussion point for tonight's board meeting.
-
The Percival house basement needs sheetrock work. Good inside project.
-
I would like to see the carbarn work continue. We can set the trusses when it is cold. If we wait until spring it will be muddy again.
-
Mike, I agree.
I'll bet those nice, straight trusses, and the rest of the car barn framework, will become weather-worn and warped if not placed and protected by a roof.
Besides, watching you guys do such great work is very rewarding!

Work done on Saturday, Dec 13:
* Car barn - Zack, Fred and others started putting on bracing on the bottom portion of the east wall.
* Loco 10 - #10 was steamed up for some test runs using a new drafting layout. We ran a test train with 4 cars, clearing out crossings on the first trip to Alna Center. The second trip was just halfway to AC.
Jason and crew plan to do switching, decorate, and get everything ready during the week.

Thanks Mike! Looks really cold there! We were in the mid 50's in Richmond, VA today. No snow.
Victorian Christmas looks like a great time. I'll get there some day!
So #10 did well?
-
A couple of teaser shots. Brendan was there so am sure he has some good ones, as well as part of the FB team.

Anticipated work for Saturday December 20:
* Victorian Christmas! Trains run 11 - 3. We need people to help with parking, tours, gift shop, food, crowd control at Alna Center and at Sheepscot, train crew, and gophers in general. Jason has been/is directing prep efforts during the week. Typically people start showing up before 10.
Clean up will be Sunday or Monday.
-
There will be some switching and set up on Friday. Crew meeting at 9:00am Saturday morning. Friday and Saturday are forecasted to be the only nice days: clear with temps in the 30's.
-
Has the little green building been ordered for Alna Center?
-
All taken care of.
-
Steve- I tried to send you a PM a couple weeks ago. I wasn't sure it actually got to you.

Work done Friday, Dec. 19th -
* Victorian Christmas prep - (1) Much switching was done and all the cars for Saturday were made into the train. (2) An extra train ran to AC with 5 cars. Flatcar 118 was in the consist and had the side rails installed. The crew put the spare benches from AC on the flatcar and then Brendan built a new set of steps for the side entrance to the car. (3) Eric set up a track layout for his live steam trains on the east side of the shop building. (4) Hand lanterns and markers were cleaned and filled for the Saturday evening trip. (5) Stacks of fresh baked goods were delivered to Sheepscot for Saturday's guests and crew. (6) Bob Longo worked on final preparations for engine 10. (7) Brendan marked off the parking lot and moved the museum's trailer out of the way. (8) Bonfire and other supplies were taken to AC for starting the stove and bonfire on Saturday morning. (9) Santa was seen setting up and decorating his Christmas trees.
* Car storage building - Zack, Fred and crew built more purlins in the east wall, filling in another 4 bays.
* Campus - A general clean up around track 7 made staging of rolling stock safer and easier. Brendan cleaned up the area between the restroom building and garage.

Preliminary report for Victorian Christmas: We hauled more than 1300 people over the course of the day, the first train left at 10:30, the last train around 4:20. The last train was a dusk-to-dark run for no purpose other than night running. Many of the middle day trains were 5-car trains: 2 coaches, flatcar 118, car 103, and the caboose. From 11 to about 1 the 5-car train was full. We started cutting off cars around 1:30.
Linda reported over $1000 in donations, and good sales in the gift shop. Nancy Weeks had a hotdog stand going, which looked like it had a good business going. Eric Schade had a loop of track on the east side of the shop, outside, running his #9 model. He had a good following.
Lots of happy faces, smiling kids. Nobody got hurt that I know about. No riots, either in the street or on the train.
Pictures, and more details will follow in the next day or so!
-
Only real report of injury I got was one fellow ripped his pants on a seat in the open car with a nail sticking up on a piece where two boards came together over a brace which had split and fallen apart.
-
It is just a small tear in the back pocket. Glad to hear nobody else got caught on it. Yet another great day at the ww&f. Great job to all the crew that helped.
-
Anticipated work for Saturday December 27:
* Clean up from VC (if any)
* Loco 9
* North car barn
I suspect there will be few volunteers on hand because of the holidays. Merry Christmas everyone!
-
Work done on Saturday, December 27:
* North car barn: The purlins are all up on the east wall, and started on the west wall. On the east side staging another set of braces was put up, for higher walkways for when the roof trusses go up. On a semi-related note, Mike found a bunch of old ties and put them in the middle of the roundhouse run-through track around the position of the roof trusses, so that the crane can drive over the track and not get a wheel stuck in between the rails.
* Loco 10 cleanup: Jason, Bob L, and others cleaned out the locomotive for winter storage: lit a fire to get a small amount of pressure, power washing, hydro test, then dumping the water out.
* Tours: At least a dozen people showed up, looking for a train ride, but we aren't running anymore until Spring. So they got tours. Most left a donation with us.
* Other: Mike retrieved some steel beam from somewhere up the line. Mike did some grading of the lot around the roof trusses with the tractor, then got it stuck behind the garage. It took the Kubota to get it out. I went to end of line with the measuring wheel to measure off the new track.
Happy New Year everyone!
-
And how much new track is there, James?
-
391 feet of new mainline track, and 404 feet of spiked-down siding. I didn't count the tail track on the siding, since it wasn't spiked down.
This gives us a total of 2.54 miles of mainline track (we had 2.47 before) and just over a half mile of siding tracks.
-
Thanks for the information, James.

Great news about the steady progress on the car storage building. Fred L. Kuhns
