Just took a trip to Philadelphia and the snow up near the Susquehanna river was beautiful. Real fluffy and stuck in the trees, but the rails were much further apart!
Those are some wonderful photos, Brenden. Thank you for sharing them.

I saw the beautiful snow pictures and I guess I drifted off!
I can see why the museum is eager to construct a car shed. Getting everything under cover for the Maine winter seems like a good idea.
Wish I could get up there more often to help out. Maybe after I retire.

Great shots! Does the Hauling and Rigging Department now have a hot air balloon? As one can tell from some of the other threads here, obtaining the necessary "fuel" to operate one should be no problem. ;)

Brendan,I'm an old guy from the steam era. By what modern wizardry do you take these pictures? Are mini choppers available now to do such? Are you looking at a screen--maybe your Smartphone or iPhone screen--to see what view will be captured?
Have you ever in the past or do you plan in future to use it over a nudis........no, forget that last question please!
Couldn't keep that from bubbling up, but seriously, would appreciate a few words on how you do such great things!

Try spelling out "Wiscasset Waterville and Farmington Railway" and it will be found as the second entry on page 8.
I just looked again and it's still there. When I tried to share the thing by typing in the address, for some reason I also get that "doesn't exist" message.

Fantastic video. I hope the "drone" will in the air for Victorian Christmas. Maybe we can get some air time on TV, for all to see.

The quad copter visit was a special thing arranged by Stephen Hussar. Trying it during Victorian Christmas wouldn't work since there was prep work setting the unit up and then extra time for arranging the scenes. It does a beautiful job and it was interesting seeing the copter in action. Some of the video was shot with the director/pilot in the back of the railcar, guiding the copter as the train ran behind us. I think there will be another try at filming with it sometime next year.

I recognized the track out of one of the recent Batman (someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it's from Dark Knight Rises) movies, and Hans Zimmer did the scores for the whole trilogy...

Watch out or you'll have the Goodyear lawyers contacting us. When coming back from our newspaper printer one Wednesday years ago, I stopped in a pawnshop for a look see. When I walked out I heard a noise up above and looked skyward. There was a Goodyear blimp with its tail maybe 500 feet off the ground and the nose almost straight up. I bet those guys had a story to tell their grandchildren.

all kidding aside, when I created the mower car, I named it ROWMOW 1. It was then suggested I put a builders plate on it (they were half kidding). So I did. The mower car was built by the fictitious company, ROWMOW 1 MFG., Inc. And it has snowballed from there. All in good fun.

If you close the windows and snuggle up in the front corner of the cab it isn't too bad. Fortunately there's plenty of heat to dry you out.
Leaning out of the cab on the push north isn't too nice without the awning. The roof drips right on your head.
I feel for the brakeman more on the push up to the end of track, though. Been there, done that. It's not much fun especially if you wear glasses or it's chilly out.

Since WW&F will be running two steamers soon, is your coal order now bigger?
C&TS gets a similar semi load every week or two.

With #10 we usually go about 2 years or so between coal deliveries. I think this time we went 2 years and 3 months.
With 2 steamers active for a while (#10 will eventually need to go down for repairs) I'm sure the pile will disappear much faster. And even #9 alone will consume it faster.

Looks like a run of the mine load like they get up at Conway. Where'd this load get sourced from and what type (Pocahontas, Pennsylvania, etc) is it?

We got this coal contact from Conway scenic- same stuff in theory.
PA coal. Think run of the mine would have much larger chunks. This rated at 2X6- though there's larger pieces. I presume that's on account of holes in the screen...

We had a lot of problems with iron in our PA coal about 5 years ago. Burned great, but smoked like heck and sometimes left a few problems when it came to cleaning out the fire. Great coal if you're not worried about smoke, though.

I seem to recall a line from one of the late Fred Dibnah's BBC documentaries that "good steam coal is the size of a man's fist", or something to that effect.

The stuff we had was too small and would clump if you didn't sprinkle it on one shovel at a time. Otherwise it worked pretty well, at times too well and the pop would go off even with the injector on. You had to work to make it smoke a lot. Passengers in the open car on the way north appreciated that.
The fire needed to be cleaned out thoroughly after a run. If you didn't the next run would be frustrating, as the ash in the bottom kept the fresh coal from burning the way it should. Dumping more coal on didn't do much at that point and the gauge would sink slowly as we worked north up to Alna.
Every time we get a new load of coal it's a new routine. Keeps it interesting, that's for sure.

As we get the sawmill/shingle mill built, and we continue to clear the ROW down the mountain, a timber transfer may well be needed up at the sawmill to unload the logs for the mill. A smaller but just as neat gantry system would come in very useful. Start you're just way ahead of your time :)

Kubota loaded up on 118 Friday to finish the ditching work needed to extend the mainline next weekend. The last fifty ties that needed to go north were loaded on too.

I would want an engineered structure. Not something that will crumple and trap the operator.
By the way, trailer works good loading the excavator, but the dozer was much trickier. I like loading that over the end..

I would say turning Case-y's steel treads is not only more difficult than steering soft tires, the wooden decks would be splintered over time.
But the use and convenience factors are strong.
Go figure.
I also support adding a strong roll cage, especially along the coming hilly, northern ROW "washout zone" work.

Wow, All the pictures of the two locos, so many cars and all and switching going on.... looks just like a real paying railroad.... well I guess it is a real railroad and it does pay its way as long as we have so many talented and generous volunteers.
And the Blizzard. In looking at the recovery pictures the thing that struck me is that it is a good thing we have Casey the railroad bulldozer to help with all that snow. Boy, that is a lot of snow to push around.

ML&M 100 (Brian’s Brookville) has been designated a track car for this very reason: it doesn’t have a sufficient audible warning device to protect crossings. It’s also got a very limited number of qualified operators and we expect its use will be very limited, though we are extremely grateful that Brian has made it available to us.
Whistles use a lot of air. Putting on a whistle on air loud enough to provide sufficient warning at crossings would be too hard on most small locomotive air systems.

Track cars are load restricted by the general order which designates them a track car. In this case we declared hauling capacity equivalent to 52. The designation was really all about crossings.

It is not something I would be comfortable in very long. Front and rear windows are tinted, and with no wipers really made visiblity tough. Low headroom, but that could be fixed by installing a different seat. Stopping at every crossing was not a real issue as I was travelling at a reduced speed anyhow. It does ride nice compared to the 52. Coil springs work well at less than 8mph..

Bill, the oak shims are used between the tie and the rail. It levels the track back out in a low spot, without tamping. Used in the winter when everything is frozen. Then removed in the spring when it starts thawing. A lot of extra work.

South of Sheepscot, a short 1/4 mile walk, you find the remnants of the old ties. Views like this are increasingly rare, as most of the top of the grade has been disturbed in one form or another.

I would like to see a section like that kept as is even if it limits how far track can be rebuilt, I would even suggest fencing it with a gate so it could be weed whipped if necessary.

I worked at a summer camp for a few summers. Cutting through the property was the rail bed of the former Ligonier Valley Railroad. There were several hundred feet of this "washboard" like is pictured above. You definitely had to slow down when you ran the mower through that section...

The "new" loader and bulldozer parked next to each other. The machines are contemporaries of each other having left the Case plant in the early 1970's. The loader is a 1972 and the dozer is right around the same year.

B&SR boxcar 51 out on the mainline last month at Sheepscot Mills while a new siding was being put in at Maine Locomotive and Machine. 51 was restored and is owned by Maine Locomotive and Machine. 51 will be in use on the WW&F for this winter's photo charter weekends.

I've heard different ideas regarding what it will be used for - including options in both Alna and Portland. I do not believe anything has been decided.

Due to mechanical issues, SD Warren #2 will not be able to participate in this Winter's photo events. That said, all five of the remaining Maine two-foot common-carrier locomotives will be together for the first time ever. It is going to be an exciting event!

We had hoped to make that a "surprise" once we learned that SD Warren #2 was unable to attend. Unfortunately, logistical issues prevented its transfer to and storage at Sheepscot. The yard and buildings are full, and indoor storage is now at a premium.

I think the present situation would dictate concentrated efforts to complete construction of the car barn.
BTW - for those pieces that are destined to remain outside for the winter has anyone considered doing a marine "shrink wrap" on that equipment similar to what is done for boats in winter storage.

That was considered, and some preliminary plans were drawn up. It would have necessitated positioning the pavilion at Top of the Mountain, rather than at Alna Center. In the end, we decided that the railroad would be best served by using the pavilion as dedicated event space.
Meanwhile, preliminary plans for further storage are being developed...

Thanks a lot Brendan for keeping the away crowd posted by your beautiful wintry pics. The storage of rollingstock and locomotives is always a tricky affair on tourist RR. We do know it in Pithivers where it brought about quite a lot of never ending yearound switchings. But nobody can deny it's still better to have a lot of material than not enough and if switching is time consumming it's as well an exciting activity when you love railroad. I can't wait for the pics of that winter's photo un-heard-of event.

yes, as a matter of fact, while working on the SR&RL, it only had a front headlight - at least that what it seems from all the old photos - plus the current front headlight is a more modern SR&RL headlight, unlike the original oil burner one

The electric headlight is correct for her on the SR&RL in the 1920s. What stands out for me, though, is the absence of the Eames vacuum brake exhaust muffler!

Thanks, Philip and Anthony. I remember re-installing the handbrake in #9's cab during the re-build, and possibly she had steam brakes on the drivers, originally? I am not close to my Peter Barney books nor my Gary Kohler books right now.

I believe No. 9 had just the handbrake on the tender truck originally. Vacuum brakes on the drivers are supposed to have been added about 1912.

One of the quirky design features of the Portland Co. Forneys were the number plates, which were customized with the name of the railroad around the outside rim of the casting: Sandy River RR Nos. 4 and 5 (= SR&RL 5 and 6) had plates that said "Sandy River RR", Phillips & Rangeley No. 1 (= SR&RL 7) had a plate that said "Phillips & Rangeley RR", Kennebec Central No. 2 had a "Kennebec Central RR" number plate, B&SR Nos. 3 (= WW&F No. 8 ) and 5 had plates that said "Bridgton & Saco River RR", and W&Q/WW&F Nos. 2 and 3 originally carried plates that said "Wiscasset & Quebec RR". These are all visible in photos.
When the SR&RL renumbered its equipment after the 1908 consolidation, the Portland engines retained their original number plates except with the addition of an engraved center disc with the new number, so SR&RL No. 7's plate still said "Phillips & Rangeley RR" (and still does - it's now on display at the Phillips Historical Society) and SR&RL No. 6's plate still said "Sandy River RR" despite their new identities. When No. 6 went to the Kennebec Central in 1924 they did the same thing again, so she still carried the same "Sandy River RR" number plate with the new-new number 4. For some reason the WW&F didn't like this, so when she became WW&F No. 9 the old "Sandy River RR" number plate was scrapped and replaced with a new plain number plate (known from a handful of photos), which was itself ultimately scrapped and had to be replicated.
It's possible the customized number plates may have been a Hinkley practice that was carried over when Portland acquired Hinkley's patterns and tooling, because B&SR Hinkleys Nos. 1 and 2 (= WW&F No. 5 ) appear to have had "Bridgton & Saco River RR" number plates as well. However I've seen no evidence that Monson Nos. 1 or 2 or Franklin & Megantic No. 1 had them, so maybe not.

Everyone I spoke with today was extremely pleased, even with the -3 day break temps. The scenes were interesting and original. A little delay at the start but the photographers seem to enjoy that too. It made the day all that much more..

I made the costume jewelry for SR&RL #6. The tank lettering is vinyl on black painted magnetic sheets. The cab number is a thin piece of black painted plywood with Vinyl numbers. I turned the "9" over on the insides of the headlight.
The number plate is brass plate sawn out and screwed to the blank reproduction plate. Where did that plate com from? I have heard some one made several a while back but what did he or she use for a pattern?

I wanted to commend everyone who made this event possible. This type of production doesn't happen overnight: it has been literally years in the making. Personally, I am in awe of the imagination, preparation, and work it took to pull this off.
The prep work was enormous in the last few weeks, and the advent of a real Maine winter made it a truly unique experience.
I was fortunate to be able to show up to a fully readied scene and participate for four days, and I fully appreciate that I stood on a stage that was set by the participating organizations' leadership, volunteer dedication, donors, and talent.
To those involved in imagining the possibility, thank you.
To those that carried the load of pulling it all together, thank you.
To those that made sure everything was moved, fixed, safe, and ready, thank you.
To those that ran the trains, kept everything moving, fed the crews, cleared the snow, and spent hours in the cold, thank you.
To the crews that got three vintage steam engines ready, hot, loud, and created many goosebump spectacles, thank you.

As for the weather, someone beyond us was looking down and giving us the best possible weather all three days. The Saturday snowstorm was providential, and gave us a unique insight into what must have been their winter challenges those many years ago. And it makes for unforgettable photos.

Gordon's comments are spot on, and all that I can add is that of all the events I've witnessed in Alna these past 19 years with our members and friends, what I experienced Sunday was one of the most magical. Watching our 13-car train work through Cockeye Curve and the rest of our railway, in newly fallen snow, was brilliant. This event brought me much closer to what the crews on the original Maine two-foot railways must have experienced a century ago. I only wish I had the opportunity to take a few photos.
The best experience was sharing this with friends. Gordon, along with the three steam crews and our train's brakemen, did a wonderful job. It was a privilege to share the experience with them. And I got the opportunity to talk with several of our photographers and make new friends.

Thanks so much to you and your crew for helping us "chase the light" yesterday afternoon. The photographers were really hoping we could find a sunny spot where we could shoot the double-header in the late afternoon sun and the shadows were closing the line down fast. I know it must have been a chore getting all of the brakemen and the engine crews briefed on the plan change, especially when the engine guys were 13 cars and a lot of snowy footprints away. Everyone REALLY appreciated getting that last spot.

Nice shot, especially at the end of a long day. Even though we were cold and tired the entire crew wanted to make sure the photographers left for home happy and satisfied with The Grand Reunion. Since the Albee field shot didn't work I'm glad a substitute was found thanks to you. And Bill cancelled his order for a new Peloton. He found that walking back and forth along a 13 car train provided all the exercise he needed.

Are there any plans in the works to create a pilot plow for future winter events? So many shots of the SR&RL show those plows in action, throwing snow to both sides of the train. That would really recreate the past.

There's a plow in Portland specifically for this idea to use with 7. It's like anything in that it's a low priority project since there are working alternatives already as normal plowing there is done with 1.

Making Flanger 40 road-worthy is certainly something that is possible, once the current backlog of reconstructions/restorations have settled down. The B&SR Plow will need a frame-up rebuild; again, this has been discussed.
The tank car 14 restoration (and flat 205) show that the partnership between the WW&F and MNG can accomplish major restoration projects. Other smaller projects (Rangeley, Combine 16) should also not be overlooked or forgotten. (Not to mention recent work done on Monson 3, cosmetics on Monson 4 and B&SR 8, and an unexpected minor repair to B&SR 7.) In all these cases WW&F and MNG crews have worked together to get the jobs done. I'm looking forward to 2020 and beyond to see how this partnership develops and grows.

Don't forget the Rangeley. The guys did an excellent job of getting it rail worthy, and then fixing the cut lever recently making it operational.
As far as a pilot plow, one from Bridgton could easily be made. It was nothing special. Just a wedge. No curves.

It didn't take us long to find a good use for the tank car.

During the first Grand Reunion event, water for the engines became an issue later in the day, and 7 and 3 had to run back to Sheepscot to get watered up. So using the tank car was a good idea.
#7 in particular is a bit of a coal and water 'hog' in the literal sense.
Glad to see Mother Nature cooperated again with the nice snow and winter atmospherics. It's been pretty dreary down here in the lower climes.

I see a black hose visible at the lower left end of the tank car, that goes to the trailing flatcar. Presumably there is a gasoline powered pump (not visible in the photo) on that flatcar, which outputs water into the red hose mostly laying on the ground, delivering water to the locomotive tender(s).

7 Was coaled up on Saturday at lunch and didn't get a single nugget Sunday morning and we managed to make it back. Granted it was with less than a chute of coal left sitting on the turntable but we can blame that on the 300 pounds we probably lost when we enlarged the cab space during the rebuild.

That's a signal equipment box salvaged by the RR. IIRC, it's old MEC, from someplace local.
Someone else here can provide furthers, I'm sure. ;)

Harry Percival brought the signal box in when he was working for Maine Coast Railroad, as he was planning to cross the road. This would have been early 1990s. At one point all the batteries for it were stored upstairs in the Percival house.

The photo size difference is a function of how the SMF forum software at WW&F is set up vs. how the Phorum forum software at NGDF is set up. :)

Just the other day I saw a photo taken at the Didcot Railway Centre in England of locomotives similarly posed, and I though it would be cool to do the same thing at the WW&F. Now you guys have done it! Congratulations.

You could do that with the engine house. You'd just need to use the turntable lead and the garden track. There's even a spot open for 10 or 11 in that spot.
