Title: A "shocking" discovery
Post by: Stephen Piwowarski on April 01, 2013, 06:20:53 PM
Today being the day after Easter I was off from work, and that being said I took today to explore some of the existing and abandoned railroads in my neck of the woods.  One which is of the most interest to me is the Clarendon and Pittsford Railroad, a former subsidiary of the Vermont Marble Co.  Today, their name lives on as a part of the Vermont Rail System, but the original railroad has been abandoned in favor of the Rutland Ry. alignment which it paralleled for just about its entire route.  It is interesting to note that while the Rutland was striking in the 1950s several area businesses were able to continue rail shipments via the C&P interchanging with the Delaware and Hudson.  I have included a picture of the C and P's very solid looking enginehouse below, and a link to a brief history of the railroad.

BUT, that is not the point of this post-  when I went to photograph the engine house there were several old glass jars on the side.  I recognized them as old storage batteries and though some of you folks who are into knob and tube would get a kick out of them!

Take care,

That's the type of deep cycle batteries that were used in track circuits many years ago.  Too bad they were neglected, the ones that are in good shape and have been cleaned up are collectors items.

I have a couple of the porcelain tops from Edison cells, which we use for trivets to park the tea kettle on sometimes.
