For many years now the Museum has successfully run intensive volunteer work weekends in the spring and in the fall. Last winter was the first year we tried a similar idea in the winter. It met with some success. In hopes that we can continue to build on it, we’ll be doing the same thing this coming winter.
President’s Weekend, February 18 – 20, 2012 (Saturday through Monday), will be our second Winter Work Weekend. The primary intent of the Winter Work Weekend is tree cutting, and perhaps getting the line cleared in anticipation of spring. If, like last year, there is too much snow on the ground to safely clear trees, we’ll work on other projects, such as the dairy car project, or Locomotive 9. The Museum will provide lunch but not supper.
For tree cutting, we need many people to run chain saws and to toss tree debris on fires. Cutting typically starts between 7 and 8 AM, and winds up between 2 and 3 PM, thus leaving time for the fires to die down and go out before the last tenders leave and darkness comes. We may be working around the Sheepscot Station area or on other areas of the right-of-way. If we have enough people, we can have rotating crews so that no one crew gets too tired out.
There are some local accommodations—the Schooner Inn in Wiscasset, the Sheepscot River Inn in Edgecomb, as well as other motels and B&Bs. Most restaurants are open as well. We hope to see you for our second Winter Work Weekend, February 18 – 20, 2012.

Any resturant suggestions besides Micky D's and Sara's in the local area? Or better selection in Boothbay Harbor?

Hours are 5 am to 2 pm.

The weather service advises that the weekend will be partly cloudy with temps around 40 Saturday through Monday. There is a chance of rain or mixed precip on Friday which will clear out Friday evening. Volunteers are advised to dress in layers and have footwear suitable for working in the woods or shop. It is recomended that members bring a good pair of gloves. The railroad does have a few extra pairs if you don't have any.
This is Maine so ... be prepared for sun, wind, snow and rain. Bring your sun block and electric socks.

In downtown Wiscasset on Route 1 is Happy's pizza.
On the Woolrich-Wiscasset townline in Woolrich on route 1 is Montsweag Roadhouse. Family dining, Bar, steak.some seafood and pizza.

The work weekend will just miss the reopening of the "Sea Basket" on Route 1 in Wiscasset as that takes place on February 22nd. Sarah's in Wiscasset is open and they have good food of all kinds.
Mediterranean Kitchen in Damariscotta makes a really fine Gyro too.

Weather update -
A rain/snow mix will move through the Mid-Coast area tonight into Friday morning with skies clearing by noon. Afternoon sunshine will send temps into the mid 40s. There will be no overnight accumulation of snow in the mid-coast region as Thursday's temps were close to 50 so the ground is too warm. Saturday will be warm with sunny skies taking temps back into the low 40s. Sunday will be partly cloudy with temps a bit cooler hitting the 40 degree mark. Monday will stay partly cloudy with highs in the mid 30s.
Projects will include -
#10, replacement of and work on various valves. See Joe Fox.
#65, truck and brake component work. See Dave Crow. Sheathing (if the wood comes in) See Zack.
Other work will be done, some of which will be explained to volunteers who arrive on Saturday. Members can see James, Steve Z. and Fred who may be involved in things like tree or brush cutting.

I think Zack is picking up lumber tomorrow. He's retrieving a check from me tonight.
A thought for additional work is lineside clearing. We need to make sure that the new rail-mounted mower can clear everything. So stumps that are near the track have to go. It might be nice to get rid of all the stumps period.

I was thinking about the same thing James. It would be a nice weekend for it. But the saw will dull quickly.

Why can't we use #10 or #52 with appropriate chains or cables to just pull the stumps out? ;) Also thanks for the resturant suggestions. Paul Crabb

Or we could could use KD's Mini. Dave told me this would be the last Sheepscot trip for this car. Might as well go out with a bang.

Indeed the Mini will be making it's last visit to Sheepscot tomorrow. We are picking up a new British Racing Green Clubman on Sunday. I checked the Mini this morning and couldn't find any tow hooks to attach chains to. Perhaps we could weld something up. We'll need to attach flanged wheels too.

Leon delivered the lumber at 10:30 this morning so we will be sheathing car 65 tomorrow. BYOH (Bring your own hammer)

And good luck. Driving nails into the oak will be something. There was talk of using a nail gun, which would be much easier getting those nails into oak.

Yep, the oak is tough. Ok - forget what I said about bringing hammers. Good news, Steve Z. will have his nail gun for the sheathing job ... it may be cheating but it'll get done faster.

After looking at the log book. There was 23 names lited for Saturday and 8 today.
Line side stumps removed from Sheepcott to half way down the Ladder. We broke one chain trying to remove a stump with # 52 in first gear. 52 uses 3rd gear 99% of the time. 4th gear was blocked out or removed for use in the steel mill.

Today the Car 65 crew installed most of the roof sheathing. We left a small part open at the north end for the crane to set the coupler. Tomorow we will start installing the freeze and shadow boards. We'll start at the south end and work up both sides. We need to get ladder rail measurements from car 312 at Boothbay to design car 65s side ladders and stirrups.

During the Winter work weekend minor work, such as valve lapping, was also done to #10, to help get her ready for the up coming season.
