Title: January 2021 Work Reports
Post by: James Patten on December 30, 2020, 06:53:59 AM
At last we put 2020 behind us!  Anticipated work for Friday and Saturday Jan 1 and 2:

* Pavilion - whatever Mike has left to do (Friday)
* Top of Mtn tree clearing (Saturday)
* Boxcar 56
* Vehicle repair
* Winter Caboose Adventure - steam trains on Saturday

There's a snow/rain storm forecast for Saturday, so some of these may change.

My understanding is that Saturday 1-2-2021, tree cutting and burning will be taking place at Alna Center, not ToM.

A shout out for train crew needs. Those who are qualified, please sign up if you are available/willing. We especially need brakemen.

We also could use someone to be "Gatekeeper" on Saturday, 1/2 (and subsequent Saturdays) and an "Agent" for Top of the Mountain for all "Steam and Sleighs" dates. These positions have specific qualifications (some informal) - message me if you are interested.

Really? Alna Center is such a beautiful place as is.

Yes, we will be at AC Saturday. The roof of the Pavilion will be useful to keep the rain off of us. We have a pile of brush to burn, plus clean up some downed limbs from the pines, and thin out the Poplar saplings that are growing there on the most recently acquired peice of land, leaving the larger trees and the fir trees. I may even bring my pole saw and prune the old apple tree to try and stimulate that. Get some new growth going on it.

I'm all for restoring Apple trees.  A tree(s) full of Apples in the fall would be a nice side benefit for riders and good for the Environment.

Work completed Friday, January 1st -

* Gift Shop - Merchandise pulled for mail orders and supplies checked for Saturday's store operation.
* Machine Shop - Alan was working on things that need oil.

Work done on Saturday Jan 2:

* Alna Center: Work was done to clear away the little trees from the area southwest of the pavilion.  The whole area was logged off years ago and the skidders tore it up wicked, so walking is a challenge.  It was also a challenge to get the fire going.
* Boxcar 56: Marcel and Zack got the outer stringer detached on both sides.  The outer stringers are toast.  Inner ones appear to be salvable.
* Trains: Public trains ran today, initially intended to be Steam & Slieghs, but due to the storm that was canceled.  Today it was just people getting rides in a chartered caboose or singly in the coach.

Post by: Mike Fox on January 06, 2021, 11:29:10 AM
We will not be running a train first thing in the morning to TOM due to the early board meeting, which complicates the trains return in the afternoon. Instead, I will be driving in Fossels and walking up from there. I do not recommend anyone else doing that with anything other than 4 wheel drive. I have room to take one person with me.

Ed and Jason have added an open car for this weekend only for crew to ride in back and forth to TOM, to provide another option. Crew is to be in this car only. Please remember your mask while on the train. While working at TOM, we will remain distant because a mask by the fire could be hazardous. As always, if you are not feeling well, please stay home and get better. We will still be here when you are better.

It is supposed to be a beautiful day so come join us. Hope to see you at TOM.

Thanks Mike - I personally wish I could join you. The cutting/burning crew in the Winter is one of my favorite activities.

Trains (with crew seating in open car 130 [aka Brian's open car]) will leave Sheepscot at 10:30, 12, 1:30, (and 3 - but the cutting will be done by then.)

I also headed to AC and took the injector pump off of the Kubota. Taking it to Portland Friday afternoon to get it rebuilt.

Made a quick cover for the motor

And came back to Sheepscot and started reassembling the loader. Front brakes are on. Just need to run lines and put the planetaries back on.

Yup. Was exhausted then put the brakes on..

John Deere is in pieces. Parts have been ordered and should be in soon. Brendan went to town on that once it was inside. He took a bunch of pics last week, so I have not.

The Forklift will also be getting some attention this winter. Several troublesome issues to be addressed.

I'm a little confused by the sentence that says they left town, followed by "they came back for lunch," followed by "went out again in the afternoon." Did they get rained on while at the WW&F?

Since there is no public trains Saturday, I would like to clean up around the wagon and sleigh loop I made at TOM 2 years ago. I did a very quick job, pushing trees over with the dozer. They should be plenty dry enough to quickly burn. I would like to pretty that up.

We could also have a second fire continuing where we were 2 weeks ago, cleaning up that mess some more. Supposed to be a nice day, just a little breezy.

This question may have been asked before, but what will be the stationary steam engines purpose?  Power for sawmill and shingle mill at TOM?

Pipes were removed (except 1) after the photo.

The stationary steam engine is planned to be used to power the sawmill. Eventually. Someday. Way down the road.

I think that's the perfect temporary solution for it.  It's out of the weather, and doesn't take up exterior space.  We have more boxcars than we need for hauling anything, so it's not occupying needed space.

Just as long as we remember where it is when it's time to use it.

I think using the boxcars for project storage is a good thing.  Items are stored safely and protected from the elements without the need for extra containers, sheds, etc.  I would suggest if we can obtain additional boxcars, then we should do so for the storage advantage they provide.  And best of all they can be parked anywhere along the line where needed.

Boys and their toys..

Actually, a high reading on a recent water test necessitated the draining and refilling of the boiler, then a steam up. And since they had steam, ran to AC and back..this is them about to put it away after dumping the fire

Stating the obvious - if we do use loaded cars in trains, we must ensure that the load is properly spaced in the car and secured.

Yes, the shingle mill and edger are already secured.  They are over one truck.  The engine is over the opposite truck and will be secured before the car moves.

There was an additional motive in putting the engine with the shingle mill and edger in a B&SR boxcar- they’re all related and the shingle mill has a B&SR connection.  There’s lots of room left in the center of the car.  I think it’d be nice to have some signage inside the car explaining the significance and connection between the various pieces.  The car could be open with a stair case at times.

See ya
Jason

I wish I would have taken some before pictures, but I took some after shots.

Brian worked cutting in the center of the turn around, with Fred, Dave, Jerry and a freshly shaved JB.

Then he cleaned up on the outside of the turn around.

James, Stewart and I, with help from Jerry when he got away from Brian, cleaned up the rest of the loop.

Don Lyons came down when we were done, and wanted to cut a tree. Brian and I helped him with that. We also discussed possible changes to the loop, and even adding a leg to the road to make it a U from the field, having 2 ways to the field.

Work done on Saturday Jan 31:

* Top of Mtn cutting: Mike and Brian and I started in the middle of a large fall of trees - sort of a triangular affair.  I had to leave mid-morning but Dave replaced me.  When I returned in the afternoon the place had been cleaned up really nice.  Later Mike took the saw and he and I cleared downed branches on the road down to Porcupine Palace.
* Boxcar 56: Marcel, Zack, and crew worked on the outer sills, drilling holes for mortise & tenons as well as all-the-way through holes.
* Steam & Sleighs - actual sleighs this time, although only the minimal amount of snow on the ground to make it viable.
* Fred's birthday was celebrated.

And Nancy's casserole was delicious.

The museum store did well, mostly due to the introduction of the special WW&F Railway bronze Lifetime Passes which may be purchased by current life members (for an additional fee) or anyone paying for a new life membership including a pass.  Ten passes were sold today (one order came via U.S. Mail) taking store sales over $1,800 for the day.  Congrats to Mike Fox and everyone who endorsed the idea of creating Mears/Colorado style lifetime passes for the WW&F.

The new pass has also helped nudge some members into becoming life members. I did not realize it would be that much of a draw, but they did come out spectacular. I will be ordering a second batch right off to make sure we don't run out.

Here are some photos. Pretty lonely up there today. Only 3 of us most of the day. Plenty of wood to go around..

Start of the day, looking generally north
