L&B "LYN" makes first move
« on: July 08, 2017, 03:13:17 PM »
A scene to quicken the heart of every two-footer fan, perhaps to be repeated at Sheepscot in the not too distant future:

http://www.lynton-rail.co.uk/files/embedded/Lyn_lives_080717.mp4

This is a new-built replica of a Baldwin 2-4-2T built for the Lynton & Barnstable Railway in England in 1898, scrapped in 1935. The replica has roller bearing axles and rods, piston valves and superheating, none of which the original had. Also a Lempor exhaust system and a gas-producing firebox.

Wow, classic Baldwin lines! The resemblance to SR&RL Nos. 17 and 20-22 (P&R 'Izaak Walton' and the Eustis engines) is really remarkable.

What a beautiful locomotive.  Hats off to the crew that built this wonderful engine for the L&B.

Here's some more of LYN's debut, including photos and even a short movie clip of the original locomotive.

Nice!
'Interesting' whistle. It has a familiar shape even if the pitch is a little too high.

I wonder how many of the original Lyn's parts and pieces were copied from Baldwin's Maine 2 foot engine designs?
In a fortuitous coincidence, Liz and I will be in the western reaches of the UK chasing the Festiniog and Welsh Highland, so we may be able to visit the L&B and Exmoor National Park.
Too many choices!

Good to hear from you, John.
I get an error message:"Link is broken" on LYN.
Cheers.

Great link and locomotive.
My thanks to all across the pond who made it happen.
