Coach 9 truck pedestals were getting some attention in the machine shop. Alan and his father Harold are discussing what Alan just milled on the little mill while Nicole is talking with Scott while she tends to the end mill

I returned hours later and they are stll at it. Alan jumped onto the larger Mill and was cleaning up the side of the pedestal. Nicole is in the background making an adjustment to the end mill.

Yesterday was either a first, or a very rare moment for the WW&F shop- in which we had both large mills working at the same time! Nicole has been a great addition to the shop and we've been thrilled to have her help. The coach pedestals are fairly simple parts, but with 9 to do (we ended up with a spare casting which we'll machine to completion), any step takes a while to work through the lot. Nicole and I came up with a good system to break this job up into a "production" system to kick parts back and forth between each machine, doing one operation at a time. For this instance, changing out workpieces instead of tools let us tag team the work and really keep things moving. Most of the operations are pretty simple, but there's a lot of different steps to these parts. Over the next few Saturdays we should be able to finish them up.

There is an interesting snippet related to the metal roof installation at the NGDF thread on #9. Here is a screen image:

I notice that the propulsion fan has already been installed on the roof. I wonder what the planned forward speed will be and whether the car can operate in reverse.

Eric is using a propane fired soldering iron to solder the roof joints. There was a lot of experiments with different soldering devices and the propane fired iron one out.

Five mph (with a strong tail wind), -5 mph into a strong headwind, which I guess would be reverse. :o

A couple of photos from yesterday, Saturday, December 4th...

Coach No. 9 in shop bay 2 (right) and B&SR boxcar No. 56 in shop bay 3 (left).

Smart thinking.  Someone posted this sign on the side of the coach.

We want...A SHRUBBERY!  One that looks nice, and not too expensive.

12/14/2021: Carlos and Jerry are fabricating Coach 9's truck frames using the flanging machine.

The finished result will be replicated 8x, then welded together to form the two frames.

That flanging machine is turning out to be quite a versatile tool!   :D

Perhaps I can use that to take the kink out of the switch stand that was being worked on this fall.  The worse that can happen is that it breaks the casting of a switch stand that is unusable as it is anyway.

folks,
I saw a report on the Facebook pages that a second set of J & S passenger trucks are being constructed. The first pair are for the new passenger car. But what about the second pair?

Are they for the WW&F #8 combine ex Edaville #26? I believe the Edaville Shop did some good woodwork; but did not build any passenger car trucks.
